Kate Middleton and Sophie Trudeau set for style showdown during Canada trip

As the Cambridges head to Canada for seven days, Duchess Kate will be up against first lady Sophie Gregoire Trudeau in the style stakes. The two often emulate the other in lace, pastels and jaunty hats. Both have shown a penchant for flowing white skirts, shown centre, and opted for veils on their respective wedding days, shown top right. They've even matched hairstyles, bottom right, when going for a bolder choice in colour, pulling their hair into ponytails when wearing red. The pair have both worn hats at jaunty angles, shown bottom left, for special occasions and even have similar photos with their husbands, shown embracing tenderly, top left. They have similar styles but the Canadian first lady is much more ebullient and even a bit of a show-off, and as a former television presenter, she may not be too concerned about outshining the quieter Duchess.

Transgender soldier born a man becomes first woman to fight at close quarters for British

Guardsman Chloe Allen, 24, from Cumbria, has become the first woman to be able to fight on the front line for the British Army after she changed her name from Ben. Ms Allen currently serves as a Guardsman in the 1st Battalion, Scots Guards, and signed up to the force in 2012 as a man called Ben. The rules regarding whether women can fight on the front line changed in July - and Ms Allen is officially the first woman to be able to do so.

Black Lives Matter protesters who closed London City airport profiled

GUY ADAMS investigates the nine Black Lives Matters protesters who blocked London City Airport recently. He discovers they are all the product of wealthy white families. They include Natalie Geraldine Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes (bottom left), a well-connected cousin of actors Ralph and Joseph Fiennes. District judge Elizabeth Roscoe handed out conditional discharges and a £95 fine each for aggravated trespass. But it will doubtless be only a matter of time before these surprisingly privileged young men and women try to once more cause untold misery for airport passengers.

How Carole MIddleton got to be so cosy with the Queen

Five years after her daughter Kate married Prince William and became Duchess of Cambridge, Carole and her husband Michael have cemented their place in royal life in a manner that would have been unthinkable a generation ago. In the process, they have nimbly avoided the traditional fate of royal in-laws down the ages. For years, the Middletons' predecessors have been solidly side-lined and rarely invited to Royal Family gatherings. So the presence of Kate's parents as guests at Balmoral, the most intimate and private of all the Queen's residences, is highly significant.

Helen Nicoll's friends reveal different side to 'the mother from hell'

Helen Nicoll's friends and siblings insist that the description of the Cambridgeshire dentist (right) as 'pushy' and 'paranoid' does not match the 'kind, devoted' mother they knew. One of her closest friends, a dental nurse who worked alongside her for a decade, has told the Mail of Helen's private torment in the months leading up to her tragic death. She said Helen not only felt 'unloved' by her husband, but was certain he was having an affair - allegations he has denied. There were also tensions regarding the couple's children, with Helen and husband Stephen apparently disagreeing over the best way to raise them. She is pictured left with her children Tori, Tom and Georgia in 2000, while her daughters are pictured inset attending the inquest with their father.

British couple paid £19k for a poor Indian woman to have their baby

Four months ago, Michele and Chris Newman's daughter, Lily (all pictured), was born in Mumbai, India, to a 25-year-old local woman - not a friend or a relative, but a stranger - whose womb they had 'rented' to carry her child for £19,000. Today, thanks to a delay in processing Lily's passport application in Britain, Michele and her husband Chris are stuck in their cramped rental apartment in Mumbai with their daughter. Worse still, they face being sent home to England without her, when their medical visa runs out in the first week of October.

Victoria and Poldark's historical mistakes

Sunday night TV has never been sexier, with ITV depicting young Queen Victoria smouldering at Prime Minister Lord Melbourne, and Poldark's pecs back on BBC1. However, sharp-eyed viewers have spotted blunders in Poldark, with historians also commenting that mistakes have been made, like the burglar alarm spotted on a wall in the background (second from bottom right). Victoria, too, has been called to account for some glaring historical inaccuracies - like dancing to a tune that was yet to be composed (top far left) and the actors being better looking than the people they were portraying (bottom left).

Renee Zellweger surprises classmates at reunion in Texas

With a gloriously awkward 'mullet' hairstyle made popular in the 1980s, it's hard to imagine that this little blonde teenager named Renee Zellweger from rural Texas would become the star of the blockbuster Bridget Jones movie trilogy. DailyMail.com has exclusively obtained never before seen images from her years at Katy High School, in a sleepy community on the outskirts of Houston - a town she still sneaks home to visit, much to the delight of local residents. As these pictures show, Renee, now 47, went from a typically awkward young teenager in 1984 in her freshman year, growing up to becoming the most gorgeous girl in school by the time she graduated.

Palo Alto rejects Mark Zuckerberg's bid to demolish neighboring homes

Mark Zuckerberg's plans to demolish and rebuild four homes neighboring his primary Palo Alto residence (top right) have been rejected by an architectural review board. On Thursday, the board decided the Facebook founder's plans will form a giant 'compound' and reduce the city's housing stock, violating zoning codes and ideal land use (the four homes shown surrounding Zuckerberg's own, left). Three years ago, the 32-year-old billionaire spent $30million snatching up the four properties in an attempt to maintain his privacy after a local real estate developer announced plans to build a home with direct views into Zuckerberg's bedroom. According to application materials filed with city planners in May, Zuckerberg's plans include tearing down the four homes surrounding his house and rebuilding them as smaller single-family homes that will take up 20 per cent of the current footprint, without a clear view into his home (artist's rendering of one of the proposed houses, bottom right). The two single-story and two two-story homes would be replaced by three single-story houses and one two-story house. Zuckerberg's plans to keep the four homes as part of a larger compound where family and friends could stay is what the board took issue with, saying it would ruin the single-family home feel of the Crescent Park neighborhood.

19th Century Victorian 'Palmerston folly' set to sell for almost £1million

Horse Sands, up for auction for £875,000, is one of four forts ordered to be built by Prime Minister Henry John Temple, Third Viscount Palmerston, in 1860, following concerns over the strength of the French Navy and was completed by 1880. One of four, the forts became known as 'Palmerston's Follies' after they were never called into action, and are thought to have been one of the most expensive fixed defence systems undertaken in Britain during peacetime. Built from concrete and granite, the fort (shown top left and centre), which sits four miles off the coast in the Solent, comprises two floors and a basement and has a circular road along the inner perimeter, known as 'the Street' (pictured bottom right and top right). It was armed in both the First and Second World Wars, before being deemed surplus to requirements (bottom left) by the Ministry of Defence in the 1960s.
