'Sorry I made you famous': Simon Cowell lashes out at One Direction after he likens them signing to new labels as 'not being invited to party'

He made them into one of the most famous boybands in the world.

So it's no surprise Simon Cowell is less than impressed about being left out of the former group's solo project plans.

Speaking to press at the finale of America's Got Talent the 56-year-old music mogul admitted he was put out by his protégés' behaviour.

'I hear so many things now, which they're doing, which I'm not involved with. It's a bit like I'm getting the hint you don't want me to come to the party.

'Sorry for making you famous,' he said in what appeared to be a passive-aggressive dig.

And speaking about the boys' blossoming solo careers he added:  'Look, I'm not going to lie when I hear they're doing something, and they haven't approached me. You think, 'Well I would have liked you to,' but it's their choice. I'm not bitter - much.'

None of the bands' previous five members have stayed with Simon's Syco records following their hiatus.

While Zayn Malik signed to RCA Records, Liam Payne was scooped up by Capitol Records and Niall joined Universal.

Harry Styles is rumoured to be working on solo deals, leaving Louis Tomlinson as the only boybander who stayed loyal to the judge, forming his own record label and working with the mogul on a new girlband.

Simon previously expressed his disdain at Liam signing with Capitol, explaining: 'It is a bit annoying if I am honest with you - mainly because it is a another label who has now got your artist who you worked with for so many years.

'But that is the music business, unfortunately. I don't think anyone else from the band will do that.'

Last week the father-of-one hit out after news surfaced claiming Zayn is set to executive produce a scripted TV series called Boys about his own life and experiences in the boy band.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the X Factor boss insisted he should have been approached yet confirmed 'nothing surprises him anymore', seemingly in reference to the 1D saga.

With the obvious echoes of One Direction in the concept, the group's founder expected consultation on the format although Zayn's reluctance could spawn from Simon stating: ' I'm not interested in a single word he says', earlier this year.

In his talk with ET, Simon said: 'Nothing surprises me anymore. I think he should have come to me with it, if I'm being honest with you.

'I do actually believe that when they've got these ideas, bearing in mind where we started, they should actually come to me.'
