Not many X Factor auditions end with the full judging panel breaking into a round of applause.

But that's precisely the impact Christopher Peyten, 46, from Virginia, had on Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Nicole Scherzinger and Sharon Osbourne, on Saturday night's X Factor.

The smooth singer/songwriter revealed his father was a Pentecostal preacher and that he grew up singing in church, which clearly moulded his impressively soulful vocal chops.

Christopher performed a track called All Rise and had the judges hanging on his every word.

After he hit his final high note, Simon gushed: 'Honestly, that is what you call an audition. 

'You know what I was thinking when I heard your voice? I remember the first time I heard Seal.'

Louis added: 'I was thinking that too, because it was a very heartfelt, real performance.'

Impressed, Nicole joked: 'I'm about to hit you in the face, Christopher. It was so good. I just want to smack ya.'

Simon had the final word, telling the singer he had proved age was just a number.

The performance got him four yeses and a place in boot camp, and Christopher looked overwhelmed with the judges' kind words.  

 Viewers were equally as impressed with his performance.

One wrote on Twitter: 'That was the best voice I've heard on #Xfactor in 5 years! Christopher was insane!'

Meanwhile, Geordie Shore's Charlotte Crosby gushed: 'I think I've loved literally every1 on XFactor tonight... this Virginian man... WOW'

Prior to his audition, Christopher told the judges how he had been in the UK for 20 years and missed his parents as he didn't get to see them often.

Asked why he was auditioning, he told them: 'I want more.'
