Suranne Jones films her first scenes for the second series of her hit drama Doctor Foster as she's spotted having a heated argument with onscreen ex Bertie Carvel

The first series was a runaway success when it aired this time last year.

And now Suranne Jones is back as Doctor Foster, filming her first scenes for the second series of the BBC drama as night fell on Hitchin, Hertfordshire on Tuesday.

The actress, who welcomed her first child in June, was back in her character's super smart wardrobe as she shot some tense scenes with her onscreen ex husband Simon, played by Bertie Carvel.

Suranne, 38, was dressed in head to toe black for the night shoot, sporting a semi sheer printed shirt with chic belted trousers.

A pair of patent heels finished off the look, while Suranne sported glam makeup and her character's short hairdo.

The scenes saw Suranne's character Gemma leaving a nightclub looking a tad worse for wear only to be seen by her ex husband Simon, played by Bernie, with the two getting into a row in the street.

Bertie was looking smart in a jacket and tie teamed with jeans as he got into character on the cobbled streets of the Hertfordshire town.

Despite the tense scenes, Suranne looked on cloud nine in between takes, laughing with the crew as she enjoyed her first day back on set.

The second instalment of the popular drama - which drew in 10 million views for its grand finale last September - will see Suranne reprise her role as betrayed wife Gemma Foster, a GP who found out that her husband Simon was having an affair.

Confirming the news earlier this year that her hit show was returning, Suranne said: ‘I am thrilled to announce we will all be reunited to tell Gemma's next chapter, and I can't wait for the audience who invested in these characters to find out the explosive twists and turns Mike has in store.

‘Now we can look into what happens to a woman after divorce, deceit and revenge has taken its toll. What a gift of a part and a dream to work with Mike Bartlett again!’

This will no doubt be a welcome return by fans after the show, which had a consolidated weekly audience of 8.2 million, became the highest-rating BBC drama of the year after Call The Midwife.

The show’s creator, Mike Bartlett, said he was looking forward to returning to work on Gemma's heartbreaking story.

‘I've been astounded by the response to Doctor Foster,’ he said in a statement. ‘I'm thrilled that alongside Drama Republic and the phenomenal Suranne Jones, we're now going to tell the next chapter in Gemma's story.

‘Her life in Parminster may look better on the surface, but as she will discover to her cost, every action has its consequences eventually. No one comes through hell unscathed.’

The five-part series, which first aired on BBC1 last September, told the story of doting wife Gemma, who became suspicious that her partner Simon (Bertie Carvel) was playing away from home - only to discover he'd been sleeping with a much younger woman for the past two years.

Thousands took to social media sites to praise the series as 'award-winning' and called for it to be brought back for a second series.

One viewer said on Twitter: '#DoctorFoster was some of the best TV in a long time! Please say there's a second series.'

'Absolutely loved #DoctorFoster best programme probably that I've ever watched,’ another tweeter added. ‘There's got to be a second series? I don't know how but...'
