Shailene Woodley sports questionable tropical print ensemble as she promotes new film Snowden with Joseph Gordon-Levitt at San Sebastián Film Festival

She was on hand to promote her latest film, but all eyes were on Shailene Woodley’s colourful outfit a she made an appearance at the 64th annual San Sebastián International Film Festival on Thursday.

The American actress, 24, opted for a questionably patterned sweater and skirt ensemble while launching new biographical thriller Snowden alongside co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the film’s director, Oliver Stone.

Decorated with a garishly coloured tropical vista, the loose fitting outfit ensured Shailene stood out during an otherwise well received appearance in Donostia-San Sebastián.

Fans had gathered in their droves to get a glimpse of the actress, and they were not disappointed as she paused to indulge them with selfies and autographs.

On a warm day in the Spanish Basque city, Shailene kept her hair pinned back, while her make-up was selected from a natural colour palette.

Posing alongside the actress, co-star Joseph looked comparatively subdued in a staid two-piece suit and polished leather shoes.

Be picture perfect in a bold print like Shailene's

For a formal daytime event it pays to not over-do it. Actress Shailene Woodley struck the right note at the San Sebastián International Film Festival on Thursday.

Instead of a glitzy, red carpet gown she wore a matching sweater and skirt from Victoria Victoria Beckham that’s sadly not available to buy (yet). The low-key look had ladylike proportions but streetwear aspirations. As trendy as the humble hoodie is right now (read: very) so is the sweatshirt as it riffs on the athleisure look that’s swept up the style set.

The bold digital print that twins the two pieces elevates and transforms the simple looking separates into something brave, fun and high fashion.

While Shailene's sweater may not be available, have a scroll through the carousel below for a right now equivelent.

The pair were joined by director Stone as the worldwide promotional missive for Snowden continues in earnest.

Zachary Quinto, Scott Eastwood, and Nicolas Cage also feature in the new film about former CIA employee Edward Snowden, who became the source of a criminal investigation after leaking classified information from the National Security Agency to British newspaper The Guardian in 2013.

Meanwhile, Shailene Woodley last week admitted that her quirky personality stems from her 'super f**ked up family' and unconventional childhood in a new interview with Net-A-Porter’s weekly digital magazine, The EDIT.

The actress' progressive parents - her dad is a psychologist and her mother is a counsellor - operated a revolving-door policy for those in need.

'I came home to things that weren’t great,' she told the magazine. 'My family is super-f***** up in many ways.

But they are also my everything. They would do anything for me, and I would do anything for them.

'That’s a lot more than most people can say about their families. I’m grateful for the sh*t that happened.'

Snowden was released in theatres across the United States on September 16. An initial UK screening will take place at the London Film Festival on October 15.
