Not Sully-ing his reputation: Cook's son Tom Hanks left a Big tip at a Boston eatery after lunch on Monday

He knows the value of a good meal due to the fact his father was a cook.

So no wonder generous Tom Hanks decided to reward staff at a Boston restaurant after a satisfying dinner by leaving them a 'great tip' on Monday.

The multimillionaire actor dug deep after he enjoyed a slap up lunch at the private dining room at the upmarket Pier 6 eatery, which sits on the city's harbour.

Big star Tom, 60, even made the effort to charm staff and customers alike by showing off his version the local dialect, with a staff member telling People, 'His Boston accent was a perfect 10.'

The staff member said the actor, perhaps watching his waistline, tucked into the New England clam chowder and lamb gyros during his one hour stay.

And they said his arrival, where he was accompanied by seven underlings, was a complete surprise.

The worker said: A woman made an anonymous reservation requesting the private dining room, and next thing you know, Tom Hanks walks in.

'He was very friendly and gracious with our staff, and a great tipper.'

Sully star Tom, who was casually dressed in a shirt, jeans and hat, can afford to leave sizable tips of course, given he is worth an estimated $350 million.

The Forrest Gump favourite even made sure lavished the staff with extra praise as he left, telling them as he left in his cod Boston accent that he 'loved the chowdah.'

Tom obviously knows a lot about the world of food, as his father Amos was an itinerant cook. After his parents marriage split up in 1960 he, along with his two oldest siblings, stayed with Amos.

And he also has a special affinity for seafood, as his character Forrest Gump became ended up becoming a fishing magnate in the Oscar-winning film.

The memorable plot development went on to inspire a nationwide restaurant chain called the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.
