  • But told reporters after his Chanel show she had been wrong to show off
  • Criticised star for posting photos of jewels to 100m social media followers

Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld has criticised Kim Kardashian for flaunting her wealth, a day after the reality television star was robbed at gunpoint in Paris of £8.5million worth of jewellery.

'You cannot display your wealth and then be surprised that some people want to share it with you,' the designer told reporters after his Chanel show.

Lagerfeld had written Kardashian a note on Monday saying: 'Dearest Kim, we are all with you', after she was tied up and robbed at a luxury apartment in Paris.

But he criticised the celebrity for showing off her jewellery to her more than 100 million social media followers.

'If you're that famous and you put all your jewellery on the net, you go to hotels where nobody can come near to the room,' he said.

Kardashian tweeted a picture last week of a diamond ring worth around £3.5million which police said had been stolen in the early morning raid.

'I think it's a very bad thing for Paris but I don't understand why she was in a hotel with no security,' Lagerfeld said of the robbery, which made headlines across the world.

'Image wise, I think it is very bad. We make all of these efforts to make Paris appealing and then this happens. Apparently they were people from Eastern Europe.'

The multi-millionaire mother of two and wife of the US rap superstar Kanye West had been in Paris for fashion week, where she was a front row guest at Balenciaga and Givenchy on Sunday.

The outspoken 83-year-old German-born designer and photographer, who is known as 'the kaiser' for his mastery of the fashion world, has previously been complimentary about Kardashian and her family.

Kim and the fashion designer appear to have struck up an unusual friendship despite the fact she was virtually blacklisted from the biggest designer fashion shows.

The pair seemed to become such good friends that she even got him to agree to appear in cartoon form in her video game.

Last year, she announced on social media that an animated version of Lagerfeld would be introduced for Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, along with cartoon versions of the Fall/Winter 2015 collection for his eponymous label.

Speaking at the time, Kim said: 'Karl Lagerfeld is such an icon and I’ve been lucky enough to work with him several times over the years.'

Lagerfeld also did a photo shoot with her this summer for the American magazine Harper's Bazaar in which he had her husband Kanye West taking a picture with his mobile phone of Kardashian draped across a bed.

Kardashian's half sister Kendall Jenner also modelled for him in Chanel's Paris haute couture show last year.

Her mother Kris Jenner is also known to be a client of Chanel.

Lagerfeld has previously said that 'Kim's contribution to beauty and fashion is the fact that you don't have to be super slim and very tall to be beautiful'.

'I like her mother a lot and I adore her little half-sister Kendall. I don't know the rest of this astonishing family,' he told the celebrity news site Page Six.

Lagerfeld is also known for his devotion to his pet cat Choupette, five, whom he was given as a gift in 2011.

The designer has previously mentioned wishing to marry the female pet in 2013 were it legal, stating he 'never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat'.

Choupette has her own Twitter and Instagram accounts that have garnered tens of thousands of followers while she also has two 'dedicated maids' employed to look after her every need.

He has also caused controversy in the UK before after calling singer Adele 'a little too fat' in 2012, and saying he 'didn't like Pippa Middleton's face' in the same year after praising her sister the Duchess of Cambridge's beauty.

Meanwhile US singer Usher, who arrived in Paris hours after the heist, said he is defiant in the face of the crime.

'I feel more secure than ever, absolutely (safe),' the 37-year-old said, adding that he has stayed in the No Address Hotel where the incident occurred and believed it to be a secure environment.

The No Address Hotel, or L'Hotel de Pourtales, is a favourite of A-list celebrities, with past guests reportedly including Leonardo DiCaprio, Prince, Madonna, Jay-Z and Beyonce.

'(Gun crime) like that happens all the time,' Usher added. 'In America people get robbed everywhere, man. Unfortunately it does maybe take a celebrity to shine a light on unfortunate situations.'
