CHRIS WHEELER: Anthony Martial came off the bench to break the deadlock against Stoke City at Old Trafford on Sunday, scoring with a wonderful curling effort in a game United eventually drew 1-1. But it was the Frenchman’s first goal in nine games as he struggles to rediscover the scintillating form he showed after joining United in a £58million deal from Monaco last year. Martial split from Samantha Jacquelinet (far left and far right), his partner of three years and mother of their baby daughter Peyton, earlier this year following allegations he had been unfaithful. They have since moved home to Paris, leaving Martial in Manchester.

'If I'd gone to a big English club they'd just stick me out on loan': Burke is the £13m Scottish teen taking Germany by storm
INTERVIEW BY LAURIE WHITWELL: Imposing even when sitting down and bold of thought despite his tender years, Oliver Burke is clearly a special case among Britain's burgeoning football talents. Having caused a stir this summer by leaving Nottingham Forest to sign for RB Leipzig in a £13million deal, the 19-year-old is explaining with refreshing candour why he spurned Premier League propositions to relocate to a place he admits his friends back home struggled to identify.
Rio crash victim Van Vleuten blasts Armitstead: 'It's very special to miss three tests in one year'
MARTHA KELNER: The Dutch cyclist who suffered a horrific crash in the women’s Olympic road race has claimed Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead should not have been allowed to compete in Rio. Annemiek van Vleuten broke three bones in her back and was concussed after flipping off her bike while leading the race on the treacherous final descent.
Her ban has been reduced to 15 months and she says she is a victim. But Maria Sharapova is still just a DRUGS CHEAT
COMMENT - MIKE DICKSON: This was not a victory for anyone, and nor is Maria Sharapova a victim of anything. Despite the various spins being put on the decision to reduce her doping violation ban from two years to 15 months, it is no cause for celebration in any quarter of the tennis world. None of the parties involved in the sport’s highest profile episode emerge from it with much credit. The most positive sense would be one of relief — for Sharapova that she can resume her primary career, and for the game’s authorities that it is over, at least until she returns next spring. There were undertones of victory and victimhood in Sharapova’s reaction once the Court of Arbitration for Sport had handed down its decision on Tuesday afternoon.
Bradford take off keeper after only THREE minutes to bend EFL rules
Bradford City defeated Bury 2-1 in their opening group game of the Checkatrade EFL Trophy, despite substituting goalkeeper Colin Doyle after only three minutes in the clash Coral Windows Stadium. The Bantams' early substitution appeared to be a bid to bend the rules of the newly formed competition, which state that League One and Two clubs must field a minimum of five first team players.

Buttler suits stand-in captaincy as he leads England home from perilous position in Bangladesh warm-up
PAUL NEWMAN IN FATULLAH: Jos Buttler continued his calm and confident start to a tour where he has been thrown in at the deep end by guiding England home against stiff opposition in their only one-day warm-up game here. Buttler, made stand-in captain after Eoin Morgan refused to travel to Bangladesh for safety reasons, led England home from a perilous position against a strong Bangladesh Board XI in company with Moeen Ali.
Neymar and Oscar lead the way in training as Brazil warm up for Bolivia clash
The blossoming romance between talented forward duo Neymar and Oscar took centre stage as Brazil warmed up for their latest World Cup qualifier. Tite's men face Bolivia on Friday as they look to build on their current second place in the South American group. The five-time World Cup winners had a poor start to qualifying - they've drawn three and lost one of their eight games - but with Neymar in such fine form, they should have too much for Bolivia.
France players appear to exchange words but it's all a big joke as they prepare for Bulgaria and Holland
Tempers appeared to become flared between the France players as they continued their preparations for their World Cup qualifying double header. Burly forward Andre Pierre Gignac looked to be getting in between a disagreement of some sort as Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro exchanged words. In the end it all amounted to nothing more than handbags at dawn, as the trio laughed off their brief discussion and got back to work.
Spurs kid left severely brain damaged after collapsing during game awarded £7m in damages as family reveal torment
MIKE KEEGAN - EXCLUSIVE: A former Tottenham Hotspur player, who was left severely brain-damaged after he suffered a heart attack during a game, was on Tuesday awarded damages of around £7million. Despite scans showing that his heart was ‘unequivocally abnormal’, Radwan Hamed was allowed to continue playing football by Spurs medical staff including Dr Charlotte Cowie — who is now the FA’s medical director and will sit on the bench for England’s World Cup qualifier against Malta at Wembley on Saturday. Tottenham-mad youngster Hamed, then aged 17, collapsed six minutes into his first match as a professional for the Spurs youth team in Bruges in August 2006.

Tiny and just 13, Dembele can be Celtic's little genius after being compared to Messi
ADAM SHERGOLD: Standing at half the height of the other players and with braces on his teeth, 13-year-old Karamoko Dembele made his debut for Celtic’s Under 20 development team on Monday night. It may have been only a nine-minute cameo in a 3-1 win over Hearts but a star has most certainly been born.

He's got some Cheek! Chelsea starlet attempts audacious trick-shot penalty
Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek showed off his skills on Monday as he tucked away a trick-shot penalty in England Under 21 training. The 20-year-old has had to settle for a role on the sidelines under Antonio Conte so far this season, but showed his cheeky side on international duty this week. With Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman between the sticks, Loftus-Cheek jogged up to the penalty spot and proceeded to knock the ball home with his left foot instead of the expected right.

Tennis rogue Kyrgios shows caring side by coming to sick fan's aid with water bottle
With temperatures soaring, Nick Kyrgios made sure an injured fan at the Japan Open had plenty of water. The sixth-seeded Australian advanced to the second round by beating American qualifier Ryan Harrison 7-5, 6-2, but the match was suspended for about 10 minutes in the first set after a fan fell on some steps in the stands. Kyrgios, often criticised for his volatile behaviour, sent some water up to the injured spectator while temperatures rose to 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) at the start of the second set.

Murray cruises into China Open second round as rejuvenated Scot targets taking No 1 ranking
Andy Murray proved his fitness as he advanced to the second round of the China Open in Beijing. The world number two was playing his first competitive match since his Davis Cup win over Guido Pella a fortnight ago, where he suffered a thigh injury, and he got back in the groove with a 6-2 7-5 win over Andreas Seppi. There were doubts whether the Scot would compete in the 2008 Olympics host city after the injury in Glasgow came at the end of a punishing schedule over the summer, which saw him lose just four matches since the end of May.

Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll football... the story behind Maradona's rollercoaster ride at Napoli, 30 years on from race to title
SHERIDAN BIRD: 'Napoli signing Diego Maradona in 1984? The modern equivalent would be if they bought Cristiano Ronaldo today. And that's clearly impossible.' That's the view of 85-year-old Corrado Ferlaino, president of the Italian club between 1983 and 1993. The comparison is perfect. The arrival of the Argentine genius for £7m from Barcelona in the summer of 1984 was the coup of the century.Success wasn't instantaneous, but 30 years ago in 1986-87, El Pibe inspired the Azzurri to their first title. The boys from the Bay of Naples had too much for the rich northern clubs. The Scudetto put the team and the city on the map and earned worldwide fame.
