Tom's irritation with his wife starts when they decide to run errands together because he clearly expects to chat with Lillian while driving her to her real estate showings for work.

'We want to get a lot of stuff done, and I thought let's just run around together and get everything out of the way for the day and spend some time together in each other's company,' he explains.

However, Lillian is working on both her phone and computer, essentially ignoring Tom while he talks about getting blood work done at his doctor's office.

Tom stresses to the cameras that he things 'communicating is really important', but it is clear that Lillian isn't listening to a word he is saying, especially after he casually mentions the doctor looking at all the 'little wizards' and 'bugs' in his blood stream to see if she is paying attention.

He continues to test her by jokingly talking about the time he spent on a ranch.

'I got to learn about being a gay cowboy. You know what I'm saying?' he asks, and Lillian simply replies: 'No I don't.'

'I appreciate how hard she works, but that to me just shows that she's not listening to me, and it's really frustrating. It's irritating,' he tells the cameras of Lillian's response.

Lillian apologizes and admits she wasn't actually listening to him, but she doesn't stop working. And according to Tom, this is a regular occurrence.

'A lot of times she is on her phone, busy with work, and I'm talking with her and [she is] not even paying attention, he says.

'The biggest mistake that we can make as a couple is not listening.'

Pastor Calvin Roberson, one of the show's three relationship experts, also believes that the couple should be working on their communication skills because they don't have any issues with physically intimacy.

'From the wedding day to the honeymoon, they haven't taken their hands off each other,' he tells the cameras.

'On one side you would think that's a little to much, but they're married and if that's where they found a connection that's great.

Preoccupied: Tom is also frustrated that Lillian rarely listens to him when he is speaking to her

'The one thing they don't have to worry about is physical intimacy. Now they have to work on some of the other things like communication and being patient and being empathetic with one another.'

On the night of their anniversary dinner, Tom is looking at his cellphone and reading the menu as he waits for Lillian.

When she finally comes in, she is carrying a large present wrapped in gold paper, and she stops to give him a sweet kiss before sitting down.

However, things take a turn for the worse when she admits that she was too busy to prepare her vows like they discussed.

Being honest: Tom, who believes communication is essential for their marriage, says that he feels like he is giving 100 per cent of himself while she is only giving 60 per cent

'I wanted to have my vows ready for you today, but I did not have time,' she says.

Unsurprisingly, Tom is peeved that his wife once again put work and her other priorities ahead of their marriage.

'This is not just an experiment anymore; this is marriage,' he tells hers.

The two are driving in the car when Nick says he doesn't understand why she is hesitant to stay at their home.

'I don't think I have to be in the house for there to be effort on your part,' Sonia says, pointing out that he was the one who hurt her.

'It's like I am fighting with what my gut says to do and what my hopeless romantic part of me says,' Sonia explains to the cameras .
