John Poppleton, from California, creates mindblowing works of art painted directly onto human skin using fluorescent shades. His project, called Under Black Light, consists of 'bodyscapes' of spectacular natural phenomena such as African sunsets, tropical oceans during rainstorm, and mountain ranges under moonlight. In more otherworldly, eerie designs the artist depicts cosmic scenes of stars, galaxies and shimmering auroras. ...read

22, A Million (Jagjaguwar)
Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) dispenses with any conventional song titles or structures on an album that reverses his recent move towards the mainstream. The Wisconsin singer is a friend of Kanye West they played together at Glastonbury and the rappers influence is evident in his electronically enhanced falsetto vocals. Adele hailed Vernons last album as the soundtrack to my heart. She may not feel the same about this one, but it is still beguiling.

Following My Intuition (Insanity)
Craig Davids unlikely return marks 2016s most astonishing resurgence. A teenage star when his first album sold eight million, he was turned into a national joke after being mercilessly lampooned on the Bo Selecta! TV series. But heady comeback single When The Bassline Drops put him back in the charts, and he offers a familiar mix of pop, R&B; and two-step garage beats here. One track, 16, even references his 2000 single Fill Me In.

Home (Mount Silver)
Wallis Birds powerful voice veers from a whisper to a frenzied scream, and the Irish singer-songwriter uses it to dazzling effect on an album of raw, confessional love songs on which she also plays most of the instruments. The stripped-back title track is sung a capella, but a move from Dublin to Berlin has furnished her with a more European perspective, with the jazz-rock of her early records giving way to pulsing electronics on Odom.

KIN (Virgin)
Disillusioned after failing to build on the huge impact of her 2004 debut Eye To The Telescope, KT Tunstall flew to California and began writing film scores. This full-blooded fifth album is her return to pop, and the Scottish singer sounds reinvigorated by producer Tony Hoffers authentic West Coast hooks and harmonies. Run On Home is all jangling, Byrds-like guitars. James Bay provides the perfect vocal foil on Two Way.
★★★
Wild World (Virgin)
Having topped the charts with their first album, Bastille go bigger and bolder the second time around. The London quartets epic, cinematic songs are still underpinned by keyboards and Dan Smiths quavering voice, but horns, strings and garage-rock guitars have now been added to the mix. Bouncy single Good Grief samples sci-fi dialogue, while there are echoes of Depeche Mode in the heroic gloominess of Two Evils.
★★★★
Messenger Of The Gods (Mercury)
Freddie Mercury's solo work pales alongside the magnificence of Queen, but this singles collection is a timely reminder of his astonishing voice in the week that he would have turned 70. Rock's ultimate showman was never understated, and there is bombast aplenty on his duets with operatic star Montserrat Caballé. His attempts to make dance music are flimsy approximations, but Living On My Own is a posthumous hit that endures.
