She's known for her charismatic demeanor and enthusiastic smile but today Queen Maxima outdid herself when it came to her famous facial expressions.

The queen of the Netherlands could be seen pulling a bizarre range of faces at an exhibition opening in Apeldoorn.

The Argentinian born royal was pictured winking and grimacing as she spoke to wellwishers out side the Anna Pavlovna exhibit.

It is unclear what caused the royal to wince though it appears that she may have got something in her eye.

As well as her characteristic smile Maxima showcased her usual flair for fashionable headwear this morning.

Ditching her usual wide brim hat the mother-of-three opted for a smaller velvet piece of millinery for her engagement today.

The smartly dressed child was overjoyed as she shook hands with the equally thrilled queen.

During the ceremonial opening of the exhibition Maxima had the honour of pressing a large red button - marking the launch of the exhibit.

She later donned a pair of black gloves as she toured the impressive range of paintings, presumably to prevent any damage to the delicate artworks.

The exhibition is sure to prove of particular interest to Maxima as it features paintings of former queen of the Netherlands Anna Pavlovna of Russia who ruled during the 19th century.

Today marks Maxima's second engagement of the week as she stepped out in Rotterdam yesterday.

The royal, 45, who's rarely seen without a statement hat, donned a broad-brimmed black headpiece as she attended the opening of the Fifth European Nursing Congress.

Maxima appeared her usual vivacious self as she laughed and beamed as she arrived at the conference that addresses scientific research and innovations in elderly care.

Her presence shines a light on the hot-button issues for older people including prevention of illness, homecare, hospital care, long-term care mental health, rehabilitation and transitional care.
