This is the coordination page for the Tip of the day department.

Face-smile.svg Welcome! Simple light bulb graphic.png

The tip of the day (or TOTD) is a helpful tip on how to use or edit Wikipedia. It is displayed by template on prominent help and community pages (and many user pages), presenting a different tip each day. The template displays the tip page named for the current date. The year is left off of the page titles, so that the same collection of tips redisplays automatically year after year.

Our purpose here is to keep the tips relevant. This means keeping tip pages up-to-date, and replacing tips with new ones when they become obsolete. In addition to this, we are constantly on the lookout for better tips to improve the overall collection, replacing not-as-useful tips with more useful ones.

As you probably guessed, that means there are 366 tip pages that need to be maintained. We welcome your help in maintaining and adding tips.

See Tip of the day scheduling queue for the complete schedule of tips.

Postscript-viewer.svg See Wikipedia:Tips for the complete library of tips arranged by subject.

Tip of the day...
Tagging pages for problems
Tagging pages for problems

"Tags" are often used to indicate problems. Some Wikipedia editors object to the practice of tagging instead of fixing, but there is value in pointing out an article's problems. Tagging allows editors to specialize, teaches editors and warns readers about subpar or problematic content. It is better if people solve the problems they encounter themselves, but not everyone may be able to. Editors are sometimes obliged to justify inclusion of tags, such as in the case of Template:POV.

Constructive criticism given in a civil, respectful manner is a vital part in a collaborative project like Wikipedia, and it should be welcomed rather than discouraged. Wikipedia values contributions from everyone—novices and experts alike. It is important to listen to readers who find an article biased, confusing or unconvincing. They might not have the expertise to fix those problems, but the fact that they report them probably means that an article needs improvement.

To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use {{totd3}}

How you can help[edit]

To suggest a new tip or report a problem with a tip, create a new section at the very bottom of this Talk page to let us know. Feel free to make corrections directly to tip pages, and please let us know at the bottom of this page when you do. Other ideas and comments are also welcome.

To view and check the TOTD a day before it goes live, place {{totd-tomorrow}} on your user Talk page (including the four curly braces).

If you would like to join this department, please add yourself to the participants list below.

Invitation[edit]

The following has been transcluded from the invitation subpage.

Invitation to the Tip of the day WikiProject[edit]

Pod lípou návrhovou cs znak.svg

Hello Tip of the day,
You are invited to join the Tip of the day, a WikiProject and resource dedicated to providing useful daily advice on how to use or develop Wikipedia more effectively.
To join the project, just add your name to the participants list. We're so glad you're here!
                      –

To invite another editor to contribute to Tip of the day, copy and paste above example (from invitation the subpage) into a new section on their talk page. Feel free to include your own personal message as well. Cheers!

Participants[edit]

There is a bot automatically generated list of active editors.

If you'd like to be kept up-to-date on what is going on with TOTD, and receive task assignments, please add your name below:

Welcome message[edit]

Here is a plain Welcome message for posting to new participant's talk page. To post the message copy and paste this:
{{totd plain welcome}} (including the four curly braces).

Remember to sign the message with your four tilde signature: ~~~~

Light bulb * Welcome! Thank you for your recent edits for the Wikipedia Tip of the day and for joining the Tip of the day department.

Instructions[edit]

  • New tips (or major rewrites) should be proposed via a New section at the very bottom of this Talk page. Ping other editors if possible. Wait for comments and consensus.
  • Minor updates and copy-edits to existing tips can be done directly at that tip's RAW template found via the Tip of the day scheduling queue.
  • The 366 slots (one for each day of the yearless calendar, including February 29 for leap year) are set up on Wikipedia:Tip of the day so whenever any new tip is added, or an obsolete tip is removed, one of the 366 days needs to be chosen. Put the new tip in a slot that is already duplicated in another slot (e.g.- the same tip is repeated for January 17 and July 17). Replace the duplicate slot that is coming up the soonest using the general workflow checklist below.

Discussion status[edit]

The following has been transcluded from the Discussion subpage and is to be added for each new tip idea discussion.

To use, click on the Discussion subpage link above, copy and paste into top of each new discusion.

General workflow checklist to add a new tip to replace an existing tip[edit]

  1. Directly place the updated (Done) tip into the Tip of the day scheduling queue at one of the 366 subpages by editing the tip.
  2. Update the tip's description at:
    1. Wikipedia:Tip of the day#Chronological list of tips.
    2. WP:ALPHATIPAlphabetical list of tips page.
    3. Wikipedia:Tips, the complete library of tips arranged by subject (pipe the description, link the date to the piped description per the other listings).
      1. If you add a tip you may need to remove a tip too. Check for duplicates.
  3. Update Wikipedia talk:Tip of the day#Tip library maintenance (you will also need to remove the added date from other months where it is duplicated- e.g.- if you add a tip in place of one in January and it is duplicated in July you will need to remove the January reference in the July maintenance listing).

How to prevent new tip archiving[edit]

Use Bump which is a wrapper for the invisible template {{do not archive until}} that is used to prevent bots archiving a discussion thread.

It produces a visible message that the thread has been bumped, and how long for (defaults to 30 days), if a value of days has been specified. It will auto-sign the notification.

{{subst:Bump}} produces:

Bumping thread. Example (talk) 09:45, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

{{subst:Bump|30}} produces:

Bumping thread for 30 days. Example (talk) 09:45, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Ambox warning pn.svg Always use the subst prefix, and place under the section title.

Tip library maintenance[edit]

As of August 1, 2016, the count of tips (from the scheduling queue) contained within the Tip library:

From the above list, it appears that there are not 366 unique individual tips, which opens the door for new tips to be added to the schedule as well as removal of duplicate tips.

To keep the Tip library in step with the scheduling queue, additional editors may help by reviewing the Tip library and performing cleanup. When each month is completed, please add the {{Done}} template to that month's line in the list above.

Until we reach 366 tips, new tips can be placed into the TOTD Schedule Queue by replacing a duplicate entry from the monthly maintenance lists below.

(February 17) – Show page in mobile view while browsing the desktop site – Done[edit]

Yes check.svg Done – Bulbgraph.svg Idea:

Tip would replace redundant tip: Tip of the day/February 17 – How to plant a CategoryTree!

Show page in mobile view while browsing the desktop site

Mobile view sidebar from the desktop
Click for larger view

This gadget option (for Vector skin) shows the desktop page in a mobile view sidebar while browsing the desktop site.

Enable this mobile view in your Gadgets section of your Preferences. Check on (Green tickY) the box for: Mobile sidebar preview – Show page in mobile view while browsing the desktop site, then scroll to bottom of page and save your changes.

There is a Smartphone shaped icon located in the top bar of tabs. Press the Smartphone icon to toggle the mobile view on and off. The expanded screenshot here is highlighted with a red box and arrow for illustrative purposes.

You can also turn off the mobile view by pressing the white-X in the black button at the bottom of the Smartphone frame. The Smartphone frame includes its own scrollbar independent of the Desktop scrollbar.

Note: – Moved February 16 to February 17. Need to run tips for Feb. 14, 15 & 16 together.  JoeHebda (talk)  20:21, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
Checkingfax – Made changes to this tip to clarify. Question: can the red circle & red arrow in the screenshot be made larger so as to be visible without clicking the screenshot? Thanks for this tip, very helpful. Cheers!  JoeHebda (talk)  13:26, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
@The Transhumanist and JoeHebda: I uploaded a new image to the Commons with a larger arrow and linked it to this tip proposal. Please discuss. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 23:09, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

* Testing

Checkingfax and The Transhumanist – I tested this tip & it does not work for me. I'm using Modern skin with Chromodo browser. Wondering if there are additional Preference settings needed?  JoeHebda (talk)  13:47, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
JoeHebda Did you purge your Preferences page? Also, purge the page you are viewing. Did you try it on an article page? If so, try creating a new Phabricator ticket. Be sure to bookmark your Phabricator ticket so you can get right back to it. When you login in to Phabricator, ignore the fill-in-the-blanks login, and go down to the MediWiki login with the Flowered button. Be sure to birddog the page and to birddog your email so you can reply quickly to any questions the Phab team has for you. Cheers! PS: Try using your default web browser to and see if that makes a difference. {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 21:42, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
@Checkingfax: – Do not see any Purge option on Preference page, however I did logout, & shutdown Win7 pc; then ran test on Linux machine with Firefox browser & still not seeing the mobile view icon. Sorry, I don't know anything (never used) Phabricator. Is that like Village Pump Technical? At VPT archives, search for mobile view I did see mention that sometimes that feature may be gone/missing for 2 or 3 days or more before being fixed. My concern now is whether additional editors are having this same issue? Also, should we even go-live with this given not working? Regards,  JoeHebda (talk)  21:56, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Hi JoeHebda. Phabricator is where they actually build and fix things.

Probably the easiest thing is for you to add a purge tab to your pages per this from WP:Purge:

Gadgets
There are also two gadgets that can add a purge tab or link to every page. These may be found in the Gadgets section of your Wikipedia Preferences, under "Appearance": (1) "Add a "Purge" option to the top of the page, which purges the page's cache" and (2) "Add a clock to the personal toolbar that displays the current time in UTC and provides a link to purge the current page". The "purge" option of (1) is one of the options in the drop-down menu to the left of the Search box in Vector skin, but a tab in MonoBook skin.

The show page in mobile/desktop gadget works for me every time.

Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 22:10, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi Checkingfax – Now have Purge showing on toolbar per above instructions. Had to create the common.js, copy & paste from example; logout; completely shutdown browser & startup again. When in Preferences, no Purge option shows. Still not seeing mobile view icon on toolbar....  JoeHebda (talk)  22:35, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi JoeHebda. The extra .js cruft is just to change the label name of the Purge button (optional) and does not affect the function of the Purge button. I would suggest "creating a new task" at Phabricator. Clicking that flowered WikieMedia button near the bottom of the logon page should log you on with your Wikipedia credentials. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 22:44, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi JoeHebda. When you create a Phabricator task and get a task number (in the format of T12345) you can post a template here in this format to track the task: {{tracked|T12345}} (with the 4 curly braces).
Be sure to put it on a brand new line or it will corrupt its view. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 22:53, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
Created TaskManiphest T126553 there & bookmarked as you mentioned. Thanks. Regards,  JoeHebda (talk)  22:59, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

* Discussion points:

  1. On the screenshot, right side, within the iphone window, upper left corner, there is a "TW" showing. Is that for Twinkle? And is that needed to make Mobile sidebar preview work?
  2. In my reading various pages, I wound up over at [1], and had to change my Preferences because it was set to Vector vs. Modern skin. Are there any patches for Custom CSS or Custom Javascript that need to be included to fix Mobile sidebar preview?
  3. For Gadgets, I noticed that Mobile sidebar preview is listed under section Testing and development, so does that mean it has not yet been officially deployed? At MediWiki – Gedgets, there is not a "Testing and development" section.
  4. Are there any special tweakings needed to activate Mobile sidebar preview? Browser or Windows system?
  5. Are there additional editors with this problem of Mobile sidebar preview icon missing?
  6. Should this tip be moved forward into March (or TBD – date to be determined)?
  7. An alternate tip idea for February 17 might be What is Phabricator?

Looking forward to a solution. And BTW, when I searched for WP:Phabricator it redirects to Wikipedia:Bug reports and feature requests. Learning something new every day. Regards,  JoeHebda (talk)  13:15, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi JoeHebda.
  1. That TW is actually on my computer screen behind the iPhone. The iPhone acts like Windows Aero in that things behind the iPhone border show through. The search box is on my screen too and shows through the iPhone border. That way the iPhone border does not block anything useful on my screen. The iPhone pushes everything else off to the side. The funny thing is the iPhone can be enabled on a SmartPhone too if you have the Desktop view enabled when you're on a SmartPhone. Weird.
  2. I enabled Mobile sidebar preview in Gadgets so it should work across all skins. I do run the Vector skin.
  3. There is a Testing and development section listed here.
  4. The only tweak I made was to purge the page.
  5. I have not heard of any problems with this Gadget.
  6. I think we should roll it out so more editors can help in Testing and developing it.
  7. What is Phabricator is a great idea for a tip. Go ahead and take the slot if you want to.
The best way I have have found to get to Phabricator without having to login again is to bookmark a Task and go right to that, or click on a previous task with a task tracker widget. Paging The Transhumanist. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 14:03, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi Checkingfax – Success!Well, sort of; it works for me with Vector skin, but not for Modern skin.  JoeHebda (talk)  14:57, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

* Phabricator

Hi JoeHebda. I am sure the folks at Phabricator would apprecitate a bug report on that. The scroll bar and clickable links on that thing are trippy! Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 15:07, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi Checkingfax – Only works with Vector skin. At Pref-Appearance-Skins, I did Preview on all of them & fails on all except Vector. Will attempt Phabricator report...I have to leave in 10 & gone for a while, so wish me luck! ;-)  JoeHebda (talk)  15:19, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Greetings Checkingfax – At the Phabricator task T126553 there is an update describing the error they found, and the user who wrote the javascript. This is way beyond me so should this be taken to WP:VPT?  JoeHebda (talk)  20:17, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Checkingfax and The Transhumanist – At the top of this section, I added a suggested shorter tip title:

Mobile view sidebar from the desktop

In addition, if this js error is not fixed by Feb. 17, I think the tip should include something like "The Mobile view sidebar option is known to work with Vector skin only. Report any error to ......... ."

 JoeHebda (talk)  20:31, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi JoeHebda. I experimented previously with a shorter tip-title but then went back to the full name of the Gadget since the shorter tip-title name left me short on knowing what the Gadget does.

* Javascript error

Yes, Phab is saying we have to pursue with WP:VPT and/or with Brion, the co-developer. I left a message on Brion's page and pinged him on his (WMF) account too. If you file a trouble report with VPT be sure to hang the Phabtracker template on it so they can see what we have tried so far and so they can see the error code that the Phab team found. I tried the Modern skin to no avail too. I know how to get to the Developer Console to see the error code but I could not find the error in the list of errors in the Console. Do a Google search to see how to view the Developer Console in Chromodo. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 21:36, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi @Checkingfax: – To get to console, I just Right click anywhere (usually under open left column) and choose Inspect element. It brings up inspector menu bar & one choice is Console. Beyond that, all of this is 100-percent out of my field of knowledge. Regards,  JoeHebda (talk)  21:52, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
I did a ce on tip above, adding a lead sentence to clarify shorter tip title. Hope this helps.  JoeHebda (talk)  22:04, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
For this tip, I hilighted parts of discussion above prior to reporting at VPT (which I will do next).  JoeHebda (talk)  13:31, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

Talk pages are not subject to MoS suggestions[edit]

Hi @JoeHebda and The Transhumanist: I want to get a few things out of the way before I post my next tip Bulbgraph.svg Idea:

  1. MoS is a guideline, not a policy; even policy is trumped by the 5-pillars.
  2. Talk pages are NOT subject to MoS.
  3. Talk pages allow subpages; MoS for articles does not.
  4. Talk pages allow threading; MoS for articles does not.
  5. Talk pages allow hiding of text; MoS for articles does not.
  6. Talk pages allow links in section titles; MoS for articles does not.
  7. Section headings should not be modified because it can break incoming links; if modified, provide an {{anchor}} link.
  8. Etc.

For starters, I feel it would be helpful to make the section title for tip-ideas on this talk page to match verbatim the way the tip will be entered into the tip library, including a link; no need to reinvent the wheel.

Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 01:01, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

That's a lot for one tip. Perhaps drop 1, 7, and 8, and make it about talk pages only. The Transhumanist 22:13, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi The Transhumanist. It is not a tip‍—‌it was intended to be an in-house message. But, I guess it could be smoothed in to be a tip! Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 22:45, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

WMF API "improvements" and VisualEditor proposal[edit]

@JoeHebda and The Transhumanist: Hover your mouse on the contributions link in your links ribbon and you will see one of the new changes on the server. Then click on the link. There are other such changes around or coming. We will have to adapt the tips to these changes.

I also noted changes to the Page → Analysis → Traffic Report if you have More tools enabled in Preferences. I hear the updated WMF API has the potential to bring us some new analysis tools as well and that many of the legacy tools we are used to will be retired and replaced by new tools.

Also, going forward I would propose that we devote most of our efforts to filling in the remaining tip date holes with tips slanted toward those editors using the VisualEditor. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 23:20, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Tip idea (draft)[edit]

Bulbgraph.svg Idea:

(draft) Please pile on:

Using subpage talk pages as scratchpads

When creating a new article in your user namespace, create an article subpage first, and then use the subpage to craft your article in, and use the talk page of the subpage as a scratchpad to list all your notes and references to build out the article with. Using the subpage talk page is also a good place to centralize any discussion regarding the build out. You can link to the subpage from your main user page, and you can bookmark it.

To create a subpage, simply put a forward slash ( / ) after your user space name in the long URL in your browser, add the desired article name, and hit the ↵ Enter key. At the next window click on the link to start a new page. Save your changes. Click on the talk page tab to create that page.

  • Comments:
    • This is really the way to do it if you like to move your drafts out to mainspace rather than copy-paste the completed draft, since the early revisions of a userspace draft look kind of dumb if it gets filled with lots of notes to self, assorted references that ultimately go unused, and the like. An example where I've done this is User:Mendaliv/surplus-lines insurance (which I swear I'll finish and move into mainspace someday). —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 22:30, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
    • Support. This is a great idea! The early revisions of one of my drafts went through a stage where it looked very unprofessional. ([2]]) I'd like to avoid that problem. Chickadee46 (talk|contribs) 21:40, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Updated 3 signature-related Tips[edit]

Greetings, While responding to a WP:TH (Teahouse) question, I found Wikipedia:Signature tutorial page. So I added a wikilink for this tutorial to the Read more section of these tips:

  1. Wikipedia:Tip of the day/June 30 – Custom signatures
  2. Wikipedia:Tip of the day/November 6 – Advanced signatures
  3. Wikipedia:Tip of the day/December 5 – How to customize your signature

Cheers! JoeHebda • (talk) 23:37, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi, JoeHebda and The Transhumanist. A while back I was going to conjoin those three tips but there was no urgency so I tabled it. I did however create a sandbox for us to work on it here.
I listed the three tips as they existed back then, and then created a monster hybrid version of all three. The hybrid version is at the bottom and needs a good trim.
So, Joe, you could add that link to the hybrid version, do some editing, The Transhumanist can join in, as will I, and when we have a hybrid version we can retire the other three versions. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 17:40, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
Hey, Checkingfax and The Transhumanist – At the Checkingfax Sandbox above, I propose another option. I really like the numbered list of three signature methods. Just because of the sheer size of this tip, I think it's more practical to divide in half & present on two days in sequence. Please see that example & discussion and add your thoughts. TIP IDEA (draft): Citation templates[edit]

Bumping thread for 365 days. JoeHebda • (talk) 14:45, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

Bulbgraph.svg Idea:

The various citation templates

There are many citation templates that can be used for references in articles and on talk pages. The super majority are what is known as CS1 or CS2 compliant. Here is a list of the CS1 ones:

You can add the above templated list to your user page by adding the following code to your user page (including the four curly braces):
{{Citation Style 1|state=expanded}} (if you removed the state=expanded parameter, the template will autocollapse).

There are a few other citation templates around that are not CS1 compliant. One of them is: {{cite archive}}

How Stop Unwanted/unneeded archiving?[edit]

Greetings Checkingfax – Today, the updates I placed here were archived & I had to do an Undo. At View history I find:

12:32, 6 May 2016‎ Checkingfax (talk | contribs)‎ m . . (64,943 bytes) (+1)‎ . . (increase archive interval to 180 days to allow tip ideas to fruit)

Since I really know very little of Archiving, I'm asking for your help. What needs to be done to insure that this Lowercase sigmabot III will not archive parts of this Talk page? Regards, JoeHebda • (talk) 02:41, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi, JoeHebda. All the parameters and their values look proper but since it is causing trouble I removed the value in algo= to see if that would stop auto-archiving. I can do one-click archiving (1CA) whenever things get cluttered. I am not a fan of auto-archiving because sometimes threads need more time to percolate than 7,14,30, 60, or even 90 days allows. Sometimes too they are needed as sort of an FAQ for new readers of an article or talk page so they can get up to speed on what has already been on the table for discussion. Let me know if it glitches again. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 05:00, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

Revision needed re: "Preventing Markup Glitches"?[edit]

The June 10 Tip suggests that editors avoid glitches in table-based pages by using Internet Explorer to build their pages: "If a page views properly in IE, then the chances are greater that it will display properly in other browsers, rather than the other way around."

Should this tip be revised or replaced? Now that Microsoft has come out with its Edge browser, support for IE is likely to end (if it hasn't already ended). Perhaps before the tip comes up again next year, someone could look into this.Eddie Blick (talk) 02:28, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Asking for help, July 2016 tip updates[edit]

Bulbgraph.svg Idea: – New tip to replace: Wikipedia:Tip of the day/July 6 - Navigate faster using Wikipedia shortcuts

(Note: duplicate of March 21, September 21, October 15 tips)

Tip title: Wikipedia's Manual of Style

The Manual of Style (abbreviated as MoS or MOS) is the style guide for all Wikipedia articles. Its goal is to make using Wikipedia easier and more intuitive by promoting clarity and cohesion. Style and formatting should be consistent within an article based on the MOS.

The shortcut to the main MOS guideline page is WP:MOS. To add the MOS template to your user or talk page, place {{style}} on there.

Any suggestions for improvement or changes to the MOS guideline begins with discussion and consensus at the MOS talk page.

(August 4) - Articles for Creation (AFC) process[edit]

Bulbgraph.svg Idea: – New tip to replace: Wikipedia:Tip of the day/August 4 - Help reduce the Wikipedia backlog (Note: duplicate of November 4 tip)

Tip title: Articles for Creation (AFC) process

When you create an article through Wikipedia's Articles for Creation process, it creates a draft in the Drafts area. The purpose of AFC process is to help new editors learn how to write better articles.

If accepted, your draft can be a valuable contribution to the encyclopedia. Wikipedia is 15 years old and has well over five million articles. The vast majority of those articles never went through AFC which is only a few years old.

AfC works as a peer review process in which registered editors can either help create an article submitted or decline the article because it is unsuitable for Wikipedia. To nominate an existing draft or user sandbox for review at Articles for Creation, add the code {{subst:submit}} to the top of the draft or sandbox page. The AFC process allows others to review the draft when you're ready and to create the article for you if it's suitable.

  • Actually, going through the AFC form at WP:AFC creates a pre-filled "Edit source" form with a button that says "Submit this draft for review." Bulbgraph.svg Idea: – New tip to replace: Wikipedia:Tip of the day/August 17 - Please sign your name on talk pages (Note: duplicate of February 29, March 12, October 7 tips)

Tip title: Article size

What is an appropriate length for a Wikipedia article? This is discussed at Article length. An article can be as long as 10,000 words or more, if there are enough sources on the topic to provide for that much content. Undoubtedly there are articles that reach 20,000 words. The recommended maximum length is around 100kB of text. There is no standard for minimum length, an acceptable stub article could be as short as three or four sentences.

If you look at the menu on the left-hand side of any page on Wikipedia, there is a link to Page information. Clicking on that link shows lots of information about the page including it's total size as well as how often it has been viewed. There is also this tool - you just copy and paste the text into there, and it counts it for you.

Internet-group-chat.svg * Discussion:

Good tip. Strange thing is, I haven't used this feature in years. I was surprised that the tip mentioned it shows how many views a page has gotten. That would be incredibly useful, so I tried it on Outline of Star Trek, Geology, and United States. Nowhere on any of the 3 data pages did it report how many views the page got. Just a heads up. The Transhumanist 22:30, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

* Note: credit to Joseph2302, Rojomoke, Liz, White Arabian Filly and Dodger67 for portions above from Teahouse answers.

* Comment: for The Transhumanist – Strange about the pageviews. For me Geology and US work Ok. For the Star Trek one only the far right column shows, so I suggest if you could report at WP:VPT so that they can fix (it might be a bug). I also did several "Random article" and they all have good page views. Regards, JoeHebda • (talk) 20:18, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing. For Geology, the following items are displayed. I don't see where you are picking up "page views":
  • Display title
  • Default sort key
  • Page length (in bytes)
  • Page ID
  • Page content language
  • Page content model
  • Indexing by robots
  • Number of page watchers
  • Number of page watchers who visited recent edits
  • Number of redirects to this page
  • Counted as a content page
  • Wikidata item ID
What items come before and after "page views" in the page information listing that you see for Geology? The Transhumanist 00:45, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
Down at the very bottom of the page, look for External tools section title
  • Revision history search
  • Revision history statistics
  • Edits by user
  • Page view statistics ( here, this one )
  • WikiChecker

(September 4) - Guestbooks[edit]

Bulbgraph.svg Idea: – New tip to replace: Wikipedia:Tip of the day/September 4 - Supercharge your browser (Note: duplicate of March 4 tip)

Tip title: Guestbooks

Wikipedia Guestbooks, according to Wikipedia founder Jimbo Wales, "can help build a spirit of friendliness and co-operation, and help people get to know each other as human beings". All Wikipedia users are welcome to create a guestbook and give permission to other users to sign it. However, creating a guestbook is also a privilege; many users have been blocked just due to begging for someone to sign their guestbook.

Guestbook cautions

  • Do not beg others to sign your guestbook. Users eventually will come to see your user page, and many will click your guestbook and sign it without being asked.
  • Never ask a user to sign your guestbook by posting that message on a talk page.
  • Be patient. Users will eventually come. After all, you should not be here only to see who signed your guestbook...
  • You are here to build an encyclopedia: Do not spend your WikiTime only signing guestbooks. It may be fun, but users may see you as a person not here to contribute.
  • Guestbooks are not a soapbox.

(September 6) - Subject bar template[edit]

Bulbgraph.svg Idea: – New tip to replace: Wikipedia:Tip of the day/September 6 - Use the Article Wizard to easily create new articles (Note: duplicate of March 6 tip)

Tip title: Subject bar template

The Subject bar template is intended be placed at the end of an article, after the References or External links and before any navboxes and categories. It offers an variant to several floating box templates that link to books, portals, and Wikipedia's sister projects but also typically cause formatting issues because of their size and alignment.

The template's documentation contains several examples where links to books, portals and sister projects are shown in various combinations, all within the one Subject bar template. It offers an alternative to the multiple variations of portal templates that may appear in the article's "See also" section.

(September 10) - Biography articles needing attention[edit]

Bulbgraph.svg Idea: – New tip to replace: Wikipedia:Tip of the day/September 10 - Where to post requests (Note: duplicate of March 10 tip)

Tip title: Biography articles needing attention

For a biography article that needs improvements, add template: {{cleanup biography}}. This template places the article into Category:Biographies with insufficient biographical information where editors who are interested in biographical articles can find them.

For a biography article that needs improvements, on the article's talk page, add the attention parameter to the "WikiProject Biography".

For example:

{{WikiProject Biography |living=no |class=Stub
|attention=yes
|listas=Franklin, Benjamin }}

This places the article into Category:Biography articles needing attention.

If there are any additions or updates needed for this new tip, please discuss here. JoeHebda • (talk) 13:38, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Internet-group-chat.svg * Discussion:

"Clean up" and "insufficient biographical information" mean two different things. "Clean up" can refer to needing wikification, copy-editing, or fixing some other mess on the page. "Insufficient information" means the article needs further content added — material that isn't even there yet to clean up.

The template is awkward, and may cause confusion. By extension, the tip may also create confusion, by advising to post a notice that says "clean up needed" that really means something else. I don't think the tip can be fixed without fixing the template first. The Transhumanist 14:00, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

* Agree: Yes, The Transhumanist, I see how this can be confusing. Now I will "ce the heck" above, strikout the template part so that the new tip will focus on tagging WP Bio articles needing attention. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers! JoeHebda • (talk) 15:56, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Proposed tip: How to use Wikipedia offline: xowa[edit]

How to use Wikipedia Offline: xowa

There is a way to have Wikipedia loaded on your computer so that you can view it when you don't have access to the Internet. It's called xowa, and it's compatible with Microsoft Windows, OSX, Linux and Android.

xowa allows users to download and import their own copy of Wikipedia using official database dumps, or by special hosted database files specifically created for use within Xowa. The application is designed to accurately display Wikipedia content through its own built-in browser, or by an internal hosted web server which allows users to access content using a browser of their own choice.

xowa can load and display multiple wikis. It is not limited to just Wikipedia.

For instructions on how to download and install it, see the official xowa webpage.

Greetings The Transhumanist – Interesting. About the only suggestion would be to add a "Read more:" to Size of Wikipedia to give readers an idea of how large a download. I am on a very slow (1Mb) DSL "internet-lite" connection. I would think the download would take weeks (impossible) to complete. BTW until Aug.1 I will have very limited internet access. At one megabyte per second, it takes about 3 hours. My connection was a little less than 300Kb per second, and the download took about 12 hours, plus an hour and a half for the software to finish the install. Was worth it though. The Transhumanist 20:32, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Tip title: Difference between wikiprojects and portals?

What is the difference and preference for portals as opposed to wiki projects?

  • WikiProjects are for editors to discuss article editing. WikiProjects are linked in talk pages with WikiProject banners like {{WikiProject Politics}} for example, but not in articles.
  • Portals are mainly for readers and can be linked in articles with {{Portal}} in an article's See also sections.

There may or may not be a WikiProject and a portal for the same subject.

Bulbgraph.svg Idea: – New tip to replace: Wikipedia:Tip of the day/September 26 - SuggestBot is a fun way to pick pages to edit (Note: duplicate of March 26 tip)

Tip title: Tagging pages for problems

Wikipedia:Good article reassessment (GAR) is a process primarily used to determine whether an article that is listed as good article (GA) still merits its good article status according to the good article criteria, and to delist it if not.

There are two types of reassessment: individual reassessment and community reassessment. Where possible, editors should conduct an individual reassessment, while community reassessment should be used if delisting is likely to be controversial.

(September 11) - Article deletion process[edit]

Bulbgraph.svg Idea: – New tip to replace: Wikipedia:Tip of the day/September 11 - How to make links look the way you want (Note: duplicate of March 11 tip)

Tip title: Article deletion process

The Wikipedia article deletion process can be accomplished several ways. Deletion of articles from Wikipedia occurs through one of four processes.

  1. So-called speedy deletion involves the scrutiny of only a few people before an article is deleted. The allowable criteria for speedy-deletion are deliberately very narrow. The list of candidates for speedy deletion can be viewed at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion.
  2. Another quick method is the use of proposed deletion: simply add {{subst:prod|reason goes here}} to the top of the article. This is meant for articles where the deletion is believed to be uncontroversial, yet does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion. A proposed deletion can be contested by any user by removing the {{prod}} tag within seven days, and if anyone still wants the article deleted the full Articles for deletion process is required.
  3. For unsourced articles about living persons created after 18 March 2010, adding {{subst:prod blp}} will propose the BLP for deletion. If sources are not added within 10 days, the article may be deleted.
  4. Articles which do not meet the narrow criteria for speedy deletion and whose deletion is (or might be) contested are discussed by the community through the Articles for deletion (AfD) process.

Bulbgraph.svg Idea: – New tip to replace: Wikipedia:Tip of the day/September 27 - Work faster with keyboard shortcuts (Note: duplicate of March 27)

Tip title: What is BRD? the BOLD, revert, discuss cycle

The BOLD is where making bold edits is encouraged, as it will result in either improving an article, or stimulating discussion. If your edit gets reverted, do not revert again. Instead, begin a discussion with the person who reverted your change to establish consensus.

BOLD revert discuss.svg

The BOLD, revert, discuss cycle (BRD) is an optional method of reaching consensus. It can sometimes be useful for identifying objections, keeping discussion moving forward and helping to break deadlocks. Care and diplomacy should be exercised. Some editors will see any reversion as a challenge, so be considerate and patient.

BRD doesn't work well in all situations. It is ideally suited to disputes that involve only a small number of people, all of whom are interested in making progress. There are other options, and some more suitable for other situations.
