Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are magnetic on screen as married assassins in new Allied trailer... after on-set romance rumors shot down

The first promo clip for Brad Pitt's new film Allied dropped the day Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from the Hollywood star.

The drama coupled with her undeniable on-screen chemistry with Pitt forced his co-star Marion Cotillard to issue a statement categorically denying that she was in anyway romantically involved with the actor or had played any part in his split from Jolie.

And while the shock divorce proceedings continue, Paramount has forged ahead with the release of the first official full-length trailer for the World War Two spy thriller that is set to hit movie theatres on November 23.

The first thing that strikes the viewer is a similarity between this action-packed romance and the one played out by Pitt and Jolie in 2005's Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which as everyone knows is when the A-listers fell in love with each other.

The plot revolves around a husband and wife who are both expert assassins and who, it turns out, may or may not be hiding deep secrets from the other.

The trailer for Allied opens with Cotillard, in a silky evening gown, walking towards an open door.

She's then seen with Pitt, dressed in a tuxedo, who hands her a glass of champagne as a Nazi bigwig strides out onto a balcony above them to address the gathering.

A ticking clock is followed by a large explosion outside at which point the two stars toss over the table of champagne and glasses to reveal machine guns tap[ed to the underneath, that they then use to assassinate the German ambassador and his cohorts.

It transpires that Pitt is a secret intelligence officer and Cotillard is a member of the French Resistance who have teamed up to carry out the politically-motivated hit in Casablanca in 1942.

Soon, the two clearly start falling for each other.

'You're beautiful and good,' Pitt tells her.

'Being good at this kind of work is not very beautiful,' Cotillard replies.

The trailer cuts to a steamy encounter in a car in which the two kiss passionately.

In voiceover, Pitt is heard saying: 'When the war is over, come with me to London. Come with me and be my wife.'

The two are then seen laughing as Pitt carries his new wife into their wedding reception and they're showered with confetti.

Then air raid sirens sound and the action switches to some kind of underground bunker where Pitt is faced with Jared Harris explaining to him that the intelligence service believes his wife may be a Nazi spy.

'This is insane,' a disbelieving Pitt says.

'If you are right, then all this will be forgotten,' Harris tells him.

But if she is, you will execute her with your own hand and if you do not comply, you'll be hanged.'
