First Kim Kardashian's jewellery was stolen and now her story has been robbed of air time thanks to a bizarre picture of a baby.

Australian TV show The Project suffered an embarrassing glitch on Tuesday night during a cross about the alleged jewel heist when an image of a baby with funny hair flashed onto screen.

The program's US correspondent was discussing the robbery, which saw the wife of rapper Kanye West bound and gagged at gunpoint in a luxury Paris apartment on Monday, when the nine-week-old appeared and silenced conversation for over five seconds.

Peter Helliar, who is balding, was fascinated by the tot's luscious locks and continually referred to the picture as a running joke throughout the night.

When it popped up on screen again, viewers thought it may have been an inappropriately timed gag, but after the cross host Waleed Aly confirmed it was a technical error.

'Obviously there was a little technical issue in the middle of that. We need to point out that was not remotely deliberate,' he said.

The Project later tweeted: 'The baby seems to have taken over, we should never have given it air time!'
