American Horror Story psychic Cricket Marlowe met a painful end on Wednesday's episode as he was disemboweled by the murderous Roanoke spirits.

Cricket met a painful and bloody end as Lady Gaga's character was revealed as an all-powerful Witch of the Woods intent on seducing Cuba Gooding Jr's Matt.

The episode started with Matt telling Shelby he had no memory of being with the women she saw him with out in the woods, telling her it was 'like part of my brain was carved out.'

As Shelby climbed into the shower she pulled back the curtain and found a man with a pig's head on lunging at her with a knife.

She ran through the house but the man followed her before being tackled by Matt.

The figure was then attacked by the house's previous owner Dr Elias Cunningham, played by Denis O'Hare, who then banished the creature but warned he would soon return.

Cunningham told him that he had used blood magic and dark power to get rid of the creature.

Painful end: Cricket did his best to help Matt and Shelby but ended up dead

He explained that he had owned the house to prevent anyone else having to as all previous owners died or disappeared.

'You two were unlucky enough to buy it at auction,' he told them as he explained he sold it because he needed the money.

'I am important to you for your survival, you want me here,' he told them as Matt tried to kick him out.

To the rescue: Dr Elias Cunningham saved Matt & Shelby from the spirits

Cunningham then showed them records of all the paranormal activity around the house over the years.

This included a Taiwanese family who were attacked by the pig-man before being murdered, and the events dated back to the 1700s.

He also told them about a pair of killer sisters, with one torn to pieces limb from limb by the murderous spirits and another beheaded.

Cunningham then revealed that all of the killings had taken place during a six-day lunar 'blood moon' cycle when the spirits could actually kill.

He told them that the cycle started that night and they had to leave immediately but they would not without finding Matt's niece Flora alive.

Cunningham told them that he knew where the 'spirit kidnapper' Priscilla plays.

Out in the woods Shelby ran after a spirit only to find a hunting party who had turned their guns on themselves.

When they found Flora, Cunningham tried to negotiate her release but was shot dead with arrows and Shelby and Matt had to flee.

At the house they met with the medium, Cricket, who told them he had to go back out into the woods to talk to The Butcher.

But when he got back alive he revealed he had actually met 'the bitch with the real power' - the Witch of the Woods.

She instantly turned him blind as he called her 'the master behind all of them' and that her 'power and needs' grew with each phase of the moon.

Cricket told them that he had offered her the only thing she needed, Matthew.

The medium then told them that the witch had used her power and transported him back centuries and showed him that the house was on the site of the true lost colony of Roanoke.

Cricket told them that the colony had not been lost but 'living in the horn of plenty.'

'There was a price to pay for all this bliss,' he told them as The Butcher was shown sacrificing a child.

The Butcher's son was then seen rebelling against his mother and the Witch telling her the people were leaving and going home.

The Witch told her shed their blood and to use the power of the blood moon and to enslave their souls for eternity.

The Butcher falsely told her followers that she wanted to repent before giving them all 'special fruit', which let her massacre them.

The witch then killed the Butcher leaving the whole colony dead in the blood sacrifice.

Cricket explained that the sacrifice was so great that it bonded the victims to the ground for all eternity.

And on the anniversary of the slaughter the spirits became deadly.

Cricket told them that the witch had showed him a spell that 'could put an end to this.'

But as Cricket returned to his hotel room to get some supplies for the night Flora ran out in front of his Uber from the woods.

At the house Matt was drawn outside and found the Witch of the Woods waiting for him to seduce him.

He tried to resist her 'but it was impossible.'

The Witch told Matt that she had been an English girl who massacred a group of soldiers and the old magic combined with the new world created 'something new and original.'

'She wanted me to understand her, to join her and I would have,' said Matt.

The spirits then came to the house with Flora to sacrifice her but Priscilla intervened and they got Flora into the house unharmed.

Looking out of the window they saw the spirits also had Cricket and The Butcher knifed him as they watched, before he was disemboweled.

'Her message was clear, we were next,' said Matt.
