Mark Wahlberg works security at the finish line in first trailer for Boston Marathon bombing movie Patriots Day

The trailer for Mark Wahlberg's Boston Marathon bombing pic Patriot's Day was released online on Wednesday.

The actor re-teams with his Deepwater Horizon director Peter Berg for the movie that seeks to recreate the events of April 15, 2013.

After a couple of opening shots of Boston landmarks such as Fenway Park, the trailer introduces Wahlberg as a Boston police sergeant Tommy Saunders, a composite character based on several real-life officers.

Wahlberg, who is headed to the marathon where he will be stationed at the finish line, kisses his wife, played by Michelle Monaghan, goodbye.

The crowds are gathered on a sunny Massachusetts day to cheer on the multitude of runners.

The sounds of happy people and scenes of young and old, men and women, crossing the line after running the city course, suddenly is silenced as the screen turns to black.

There are a few brief glimpses intercut with black of Wahlberg responding to the sounds of two explosions followed by screams.

The bombing turned out to be a terrorist attack carried out by brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev using pressure cooker bombs.

The two explosions killed 3 civilians and injured an estimated 264 others.

During the ensuing manhunt, Tamerlan, 26, was killed and Dzokhar, 23, was arrested. Following a trial, Dzhokar was sentenced to death on May 15, 2015.

Patriots Day was filmed in Massachusetts this past spring including at the 2016 Boston Marathon finish line in Copley Square.

The patriotic angle is played up in the trailer by the use throughout of a single piano playing the music for America The Beautiful.

Patriots Day will open in movie theatres in Boston, New York and Los Angeles on December 21, making it eligible for awards consideration,  before opening nationwide on January 13, 2017.
