'He had no idea!' Jamie Dornan kicks back on the golf course in rural Scotland... after his dad Jim reveals he's landed a part in the Hollywood hunk's BBC drama The Fall

He may be a retired obstetrician, but that didn't stop Professor Jim Dornan taking a role on his son's biggest TV shows.

The 68-year-old grandfather appears in this week's installment of The Fall which made a star out of Jamie Dornan, who was trying to take his mind off Hollywood, on the gold course in Scotland on Wednesday.

'It was the writer and producer Allan Cubitt’s idea,' Jim told The Belfast Telegraph. 'I met him socially and he asked me to take part in The Fall. He really wanted me to do it for Jamie.'

However, Jim's appearance on the show came as a surprise to Jamie, who plays creepy mass murderer Paul Spector in the hit BBC drama.

'Jamie had finished filming and he had no idea I was going to be in it,' reveals Jim.'It came as a real surprise to him when he found out.'

Viewers will be able to spot Jim in the second episode of the show which airs this Thursday.

He plays chief John Porter, who has to ask Assistant Chief Constable Jim Burns (John Lynch) for an update in Spector's case.

Jim even got a line, but according to the newspaper he needed a few takes to get it right.

And although it's his son who has gone on to make a name for himself in the acting world, Jim admits that he did in fact consider acting as a career.

'I certainly would have considered acting as a career if medicine hadn’t worked out,' he said.

Meanwhile, fans will be hoping the programme picks up the pace this week after it was criticised for resembling a boring episode of Casualty rather than a crime drama.

Fans to took Twitter to criticise the episode, with user Direlogue asking: 'Was I watching #TheFall last night or Casualty?'

Meanwhile Saint_91 described it as '50 Shades of Grey's Anatomy' and a 'snoozefest' and Palinlover said that 'The amount of blood just from the first 30 minutes is enough to put me off my cereal.'

Their comments came with most of the action taking place in hospital as medics battled to save Jamie's character, a former bereavement counsellor, after he was shot by the husband of a former patient.

This week sees Gillian Anderson's character Stella Gibson being investigated over the police operation which ended in Spector being shot.
