Disney stars Dove Cameron and Ryan McCartan have broken up less than six months after getting engaged.

The couple, who dated for four years, met on the set of Disney’s Liv and Maddie and it seems it was the Hairspray Live! actress that called time on the relationship.

'Dove has decided this relationship isn't what she wants,' Ryan, 23, shared on Twitter on Wednesday.

'We still love each other very much. Please be sensitive, as this is painful' he added.

He added in a follow-up post: 'I love you all. Thanks for keeping me up' along with a heart emoji.

The actor also shared a selfie on Monday as he revealed he was trying to cheer himself up by watching his favourite football team, the Minnesota Vikings.

Ryan, 23, took to Twitter to reveal that it was Dove that ended the relationship

Ryan, who stars in upcoming The Rocky Horror Picture Show, talked to E News just last month about the couple's wedding plans.

'She's so busy. I'm so busy. The last thing we want to do is turn it into another thing on the to-do list, you know what I mean?

'I mean, we're infants—we're children—so we have a lot of time to plan and get it done, and it'll happen when it's supposed to.'

He proposed to Dove, 20, in April and shared the moment on Instagram writing: 'Dedicating my 1,000th post to my fiancée. I can't believe I get to call you that. Thanks for saying yes.'
