The 52-year-old host also said people should listen to the warnings and evacuate to make things easier for emergency service crews.

'You must evacuate it's a rule, but not everyone is listening because 'freedom' and stuff,' he said.

'Freedom - tell that to the one who has to come dig you out... you love law enforcement until all of a sudden you put them in jeopardy, think about it.'

Viewers were split on Smith's worst-case scenario comments, with some saying the Fox News host was trying to reach people who may have ignored the warnings.

'Shep, you're right to speak very directly & urgently about #HurricaneMatthew. You have valuable experience dealing with storms,' one person tweeted.

'Kinda love Shep Smith and his lack of sugar coating,' another wrote.

Some viewers praised the direct segment, saying the Fox News host was 'telling it like it is'

'(Shep) telling it like it is! You are my new favorite weatherman!' a viewer chimed in.

'Dear @ShepNewsTeam will you do the weather for EVERYONE in the US from here on out?' another added.

However others were upset with the Fox News presenter, claiming he was making light of the deadly situation.

'Reports like that is (sic) what instills mass hysteria. There's no need for it,' a viewer wrote.

Other viewers questioned why Fox News aired the segment with Smith, accusing him of causing 'mass hysteria'

'Shep Smith needs to stick to the anchor desk. If he didn't seem like a weatherman, it's because he's not,' one person tweeted.

'Has he lost his f'in (sic) mind?' another added.

Other viewers seemed to avoid having an opinion on Smith's segment, and were instead shocked it was aired.

''You're all dead', 'police will find your corpse' omfg Shep's lost his damn mind!' one viewer wrote.
