Puppy love at first sight! Chris Pine gets a new best friend as he adopts sweet pit bull from the animal shelter

One lucky pup no doubt feels like it has won the doggie lottery after being rescued by none other than Chris Pine.

The 36-year-old found his new best friend on Wednesday while visiting the North Central shelter in Los Angeles.

Instagram account Home Dog LA shared a photo which showed Chris cradling the adorable black pit bull mix puppy in his arms.

'Super handsome guys adopt dogs too! And sweet Pit Bulls at that,' the caption read. '#chrispine came to @northcentralshelter to find his new best friend and little Wednesday Weld won the lottery.

'Happy Trails, guys! And thank you for adopting from your local shelter. #adoptdontshop #shelterdogs #pitbull #blackdog #love.'

In the snapshot, Chris looked instantly smitten with his dog, as he smiled at the camera while sporting a white T-shirt, jeans and a black baseball cap.

The Star Trek actor was doing his bit to help homeless animals in need by rescuing a pooch instead of getting one from a breeder.

As Chris no doubt knows, the overpopulation of companion animals means an estimated 2.7million are euthanised in the US each year.

The hunky star was taking time out of his busy schedule to visit the shelter.

Chris recently finished work on the much-anticipated Wonder Woman movie, which is due for release next year.

The actor is portraying Wonder Woman's love interest Steve Trevor, while Gal Gadot is playing the superhero after her appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

Chris is also set to reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk in another Star Trek movie.

The latest film in the saga, Star Trek Beyond, was released in the summer and this year has also seen Chris star in Hell Or High Water and The Finest Hours.
