So, no pirates then? Boy eagerly smashes open a bottle to read the hidden message inside - only to discover it is one day old and written by two men on a cocaine session

  • Robbie Chappell, 13, discovered a beer bottle on a beach in Hampshire
  • The youngster was excited to smash it open as there was a message inside
  • But he was shocked to find it was a note from men who were on cocaine

A schoolboy eagerly smashed open a beer bottle he found on a beach so he could read the secret message inside - but was shocked to discover it was a note from two drugged-up men on cocaine.

Robbie Chappell, 13, found the Heineken beer bottle on Hayling Island, Hampshire, while walking his dog on Sunday.

The youngster excitedly rushed home and used a small hammer five times to break the glass on the ground.

His stepfather Robert Smith recorded the moment Robbie got his hands on the message - which they hoped would be an important discovery.

However, the note - which turned out was written the day before - told the tale about two friends who were on 'out their nut' during a cocaine session.

Robbie pulled out the damp scrap of paper which read: 'Dan and Dan was here 1/10/16 12.19pm out our nuts on cocaine! Massive love for the sesh! Lots of love sesh gremlins.'

After reading the note written by the pair, who described themselves as the 'sesh gremlins, Mr Smith shouted out 'No pirates, then. Just druggies'.

The teenager was walking near Langstone Harbour with his mother Catharine Smith, and their dog Ben when they spotted the bottle when the tide was out.

Mrs Smith, 45, said: 'It's got to be the world's worst message in a bottle effort.

'We thought it might be something exciting from France from years ago, but actually it was from a couple of druggies the day before.

'We were just walking the dog by the harbour and saying we should come down more often because there was a lot of rubbish that needed picking up.

'Robbie saw the Heineken bottle and shouted to me that there was a message inside. I said not to break it on the shore as we'd just create more mess.

'I carried it all the way home in my coat pocket and we got quite excited thinking about what was inside.

'We were talking about an episode of Family Guy where Peter thinks he's found a treasure trail and spend weeks trying to find this restaurant voucher and when he gets there it's expired.

'So we had all these exotic ideas of what it might be and Robert thought it would be a good idea to film the grand opening. It could have been anything.

'We found a hammer and Robbie smash it up and then his dad read out the message. I think we were all a bit underwhelmed.

'Robbie's a pretty streetwise kid so he knew what it was about. We were just laughing at how ridiculous it was.'

Robbie gently tapped the 500ml bottle until it breaks and then grins as his dad reads out the contents of the note before remarking: 'Oh, beautiful'.

Mother-of-two Catharine, who runs a vintage camera sales business with Robert, 51, said she had 'no idea' where the bottle had originated.

Catharine, who also has an 18-year-old son, James Uzzell, said: 'It's probably not travelled very far at all given that we found it after one day.

'It was wet though so it must have been in the water at some point.

'It's quite dark down there and we've had some nice evenings so I can imagine there's the odd beach party at night and maybe it's a leftover from one of those.

'Portsmouth is just across the channel and then in the other direction there's France. I wouldn't really know how many cocaine users there are around here.

'We were pretty astonished by it so we thought we had to share the video with people. We didn't expect it to be shared 16,000 times. Robbie doesn't seem bothered about it.

'I do wonder if the people involved have seen it at all. I'd be surprised if they haven't.'
