Getting to know her new colleagues? Mel B 'follows' The X Factor Australia's Guy Sebastian and Adam Lambert fuelling speculation she's set to return as 'Underdog judge'

Rumours have been swirling for weeks around the identity of The X Factor Australia's 'Underdog judge.'

And more evidence has surfaced to suggest that the mystery celebrity is none other than Mel B, who left the show three years ago on bad terms with Channel Seven.

As reported by TV Tonight, the 41-year-old recently 'followed' judges Guy Sebastian and Adam Lambert on Instagram, after having already followed Iggy Azalea.

In August, the former Spice Girl was said to be joining as the fourth member of the coaching cast due to her close connection to series creator Simon Cowell as she appears on the UK version of the show this year.

'Mel is a real favourite with Simon. He loves her straight-talking attitude,' an anonymous insider told The Sun.

The report came just hours before a teaser clip for the surprise judge aired on TV and the program's social media pages.

The promo features a female judge watching the show from a secret room.

The figure is obscured by a high-backed leather chair and, as many fans pointed out, may have been a stand-in who bared only passing resemblance to the judge.

Sebastian, Azalea and Lambert all appeared in the clip talking about how excited they were for the new season, which started on Sunday.

Host Jason Dundas then reveals the trio have 'no idea' that 'they are not alone' as a fourth judge will be joining them.

If the pop star is revealed to be the mystery personality, it would be just three years after her ugly split with X-Factor broadcaster Channel 7.

The channel successfully sued the 41-year-old for breach of contract in 2013 to block her joining Australia's Got Talent on rival network, Channel 9.

Reaction from fans to the rumour was polarised as to whether the former Spice Girl, full name Melanie Brown, was a good choice for the show.

'Out of all the judges that they 'could' have picked, they picked her. Bring back Redfoo, Nat Bass, bring in Jess Mauboy, Ricki-Lee, ANYONE but Mel B,' one wrote in a Facebook comment to the clip.

'Oh goddddddd I hope it's not Mel B. I'm bored already,' wrote another.

'I hope Mel B . She is so cool and funny,' a more supportive fan wrote.

Not everyone was convinced Mel B would be among the line up, with fans throwing around names like Jessica Mauboy, Nikki Minaj and Demi Lovato.

One Instagram commenter speculated it could be Rita Ora or Selena Gomez due to similarities between the figure in the ad and the two singers.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the new addition will mentor contestants who are voted off by the three main judges.

Channel Seven, which airs the popular reality series, are set to release a promotional clip in the next few days that will unveil the new face joining the show.

The details about the new series come after host Jason Dundas revealed at the David Jones launch in Sydney on Thursday night that filming has been a roller coaster ride.

'I've cried a couple of times. It's so emotional,' he revealed.

Speaking about Iggy's addition to the show, Jason gushed about the Aussie rapper.

'She's cool. I've known her before she kind of exploded in the US.

'She's really sympathetic to people that are unique,' he added.
