Veteran golfer Peter Senior, 56, wins his third Australian Masters crown as he defeats former world number one Adam Scott

Golfer Peter Senior has won the Australian Masters for the third time at the age of 56, at the Huntingdale Golf Club in Melbourne.

Senior, who has now won tournaments across five decades, finished two shots ahead of Andrew Evans, Matt Millar and Bryson DeChambeau by producing an three-under final round.

The 56-year-old was tied with Evans with just two holes to play in the championship, but his fellow Australian dropped shots on both and derailed his chances.

'I'm a bit long in the tooth now, but it's amazing,' Senior said after winning.

'I drove it pretty well today, hit a lot of good shots... and managed to hang on.

'It's always tough... the young guys just hit it so far.'

Senior also thanked his wife, Julie, and his son after the triumphant performance.

The Australian has now won the tournament three times, following previous successes in 1991 and 1995. 

Former world number one Adam Scott struggled for the first three rounds of the tournament, and was unable to mount a charge on the final day despite an improved performance.

Senior turned pro in 1978, and has gone on to win 33 tournaments throughout his illustrious career. His last big win came in 2012, when claimed the Australian Open.
