City Council subpoenas Boston University president

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston City Council has taken the unusual step of issuing a subpoena to the president of Boston University to compel him to appear at a hearing on diversity at city colleges.

The council said it acted after the university failed to comply with a request to send a representative to a hearing last month.

President Robert Brown faces arrest if he fails to appear at the Dec. 2 meeting of the council's Education Committee.

Councilor Tito Jackson tells The Boston Globe (http://bit.ly/1rb6NYN ) the committee requested that Brown testify Oct. 24. The university told the council with less than 24 hours' notice that no representatives would attend. The university sent written testimony instead.

A school spokesman says the subpoena "seems unnecessary," and the university is exploring its next step.
