  • Christian Eriksen equalised shortly after for hosts
  • Roberto Soldado put Spurs ahead on cusp of half-time
  • Tottenham starting XI: Lloris (c), Vertonghen, Chiriches, Fazio, Davies, Bentaleb, Mason, Lennon, Eriksen, Kane, Soldado
  • Spurs subs: Vorm, Kaboul, Paulinho, Lamela, Dier, Dembele, Chadli
  • Everton starting XI: Howard, Baines, Jagielka (c), Distin, Coleman, Barry, Besic, Eto'o, Barkley, Mirallas, Lukaku

Roberto Soldado scored his first Premier League goal since March and only his third in a year to give Tottenham Hotspur a much-needed win over Everton at White Hart Lane.

Everton took the lead inside 15 minutes thanks to a fabulous strike from Kevin Mirallas, firing into the top corner from the edge of the area.

But Spurs showed character to get their way back into the game. Harry Kane powered through the Everton defence and shot at goal, but Tim Howard's parry found its way to Christian Eriksen, who slotted home into the corner.

Here is how the table stands in the fight to reach the top four

A brilliant advertisement for the Premier League at White Hart Lane, with Tottenham just edging out Everton 2-1.

It leaves the Toffees down in tenth but Spurs climb to seventh level on points with Arsenal ahead of them, and just two points off Manchester United in a Champions League place.

There is more to come on the homepage, but that's all from me here. Thanks for following.

FULL-TIME: Tottenham 2-1 Everton
Tottenham Hotspur's Christian Eriksen (centre) is challenged by Everton's Aidan McGeady (left) and Seamus Coleman
17:51

90+3min: Now Tottenham have claims for a penalty! Kane breaks into the box for Spurs on the counter attack, but despite being tripped by Besic, play is waved on.

17:49

90+2min: More bookings for Tottenham as Eriksen is cautioned for breaking up a counter attack.

17:48

90min: Should the Toffees have a penalty? Fazio handled the ball inside the box from a free-kick. He knows little of it but his hand was raised. There will be three added minutes at the Lane. Spurs hanging on now.

17:46

89min: Some fairly desperate lunges from Tottenham now as Everton throw the kitchen sink at Spurs. Ben Davies is booked for chopping down Lukaku on the left.

17:44

87min: Lamela has been sloppy on the ball since coming on and now he is booked as he takes down Baines on the Spurs right wing. Everton appear to have run out of ideas - but there is tension in the air at the Lane.

17:42

84min: Everton are gambling going forward and are starting to leave big gaps for Tottenham to exploit. Paulinho intercepts a pass near the halfway line, but his through ball for Lamela is just too heavy for the Argentine who is left stretching in vain to reach it on the edge of the Toffees box.

17:38
Tottenham substitution

81min: Final change for Spurs who look to bolster the midfield as Paulinho replaces Soldado - who is cheered off by the home fans. His goal separates the two teams going into the final nine minutes.

Seamus Coleman of Everton sees his shot tipped behind by the onrushing Hugo Lloris
17:37

80min: We haven't seen much from Lukaku this half and he hasn't quite found his game today. The Everton striker collects a pass from Coleman on the edge of the box, but after turning, his shot across goal flies comfortably wide.

17:35

78min: No, no it isn't. Baines' long pass into the box sees Spurs catch Everton out with the offside trap.

17:34

77min: Is this one? Everton win a free-kick 30 yards out as Lamela trips Barkley.

17:34

75min: Into the last 15 minutes, but although the time is ticking away, this game certainly isn't fading away with it.

It's on a knife edge as Everton search for an equaliser with Spurs just as keen to grab a third. You can be sure there are more chances to come!

17:29

72min: Brilliant from Barkley! On the edge of the box he plays a cleverly disguised pass for Coleman inside the area, but the full-back's shot is tipped behind by Lloris. Everton applying the pressure!

Everton's Ross Barkley (left) holds off Tottenham Ryan Mason as the Toffees press for an equaliser
17:28
Tottenham substitution

70min: The Romania international cannot continue then as Eric Dier replaces him. Baines will take note on the left...

17:27

69min: Some concerns for Tottenham as Chiriches appears to have picked up a knock. He is already third-choice playing right back with Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker ruled out.

17:24

66min: I still wouldn't rule Everton out of this in what has been a high quality game. Both teams are pressing high and both are leaving gaps at the back. It's so open right now at the Lane.

17:22

63min: Spurs are aiming to pick Everton off on the counter, with Lamela leading the latest one, and finding Eriksen.

The Dane cuts inside from the left, but his attempted shot from 25 yards is well blocked as Everton clear.

17:19
Tottenham and double Everton substitution

60min: Ryan Mason rifles a long range strike over the bar from an Eriksen lay-off as a raft of changes follow.

Eto'o and Mirallas depart for the Toffees as Leon Osman and Aiden McGeady come on.

Erik Lamela replaces Lennon for Spurs.

Tottenhamís Jan Vertonghen (left) challenges Everton's Ross Barkley for the ball
17:16

59min: Eriksen whips in a low cross into the six-yard box but Federico Fazio fails to connect as the ball flies wide. Where's Roberto when you need him?

17:14

56min: Vlad Chiriches is booked for Spurs after holding back Mirallas on the counter attack.

17:13

55min: It's taken 10 minutes but Tottenham are back on the attack as Kane cuts inside from the right, before curling a left-foot shot across goal which is well taken by Howard.

17:10

52min: But now Coleman has to do some defending! Phil Jagielka is caught out trying to head clear a long ball, enabling Soldado to run in on goal.

Coleman is on hand to cover though and just gets in front of the Spaniard to steal possession as the striker was poised to shoot inside the box.

Tottenham's Nabil Bentaleb (right) has his shirt pulled by Everton 's Muhamed Besic
17:09

51min: Everton are constantly looking to pick out Coleman - and are often succeeding. The full-back's end product needs to improve but these are good signs for the Toffees as they continue to put Spurs under pressure.

17:06

48min: Good start from Everton who are taking the game to Tottenham at the start of the half. Coleman and Baines are already pushing up on the flanks to try and stretch the home defence. No gaps just yet though.

SECOND-HALF: No changes as Everton restart at White Hart Lane

17:01
PLAYER WATCH: Seamus Coleman (Everton)

Is this Eveton's avenue back into the game?

Seamus Coleman's impact faded as the half wore on, but he has been a threat and has constantly taken advantage of Christian Eriksen's slight naivety when it comes to defending.

He will certainly prove key for the Toffees in the second period, here is his heat map from the first half.

That goal has gone down very well with the Spurs supporters too

'He came from sunny Spain to play at White Hart Lane, Soldado!' was the chant as the teams headed off at the break.

Spurs have responded well since falling behind and are just about good value for the lead. You would be a fool to write Everton off at this stage though...

HALF-TIME: Tottenham 2-1 Everton

16:46
GOAL! TOTTENHAM 2-1 Everton

45+1min: It really is all happening at White Hart Lane now. In added on time at the end of the first half, Roberto Soldado scores his first league goal since the start of March after collecting a pass from Aaron Lennon before steering a shot past Howard. What scenes in north London!

16:45

43min: Everton boss Roberto Martinez has an Alan Partridge moment down on the touchline, as Michael Oliver books Mirallas for kicking the ball away after conceding a free-kick.

The Toffees manager constantly shouts 'Michael!' at the official who is simply too busy jotting down Mirallas' name to take notice. If only the referee was called Dan (Partridge fans will understand).

16:41

40min: Everton have struggled in containing the hosts but the Toffees are maintaining a threat in attack. Coleman is still pushing up heavily on the right and it's giving the hosts plenty to think about.

16:39

37min: Chances at both ends. First Seamus Coleman's near post effort from 20 yards is well stopped by Lloris, but the Toffees create an opening at the other end too.

Muhamed Besic's backpass header is superbly read by Soldado, but the striker can't adjust his body enough to steer a first-time shot past Howard, who is quick off his line to collect.

16:34

34min: Tottenham are really taking control now. Aaron Lennon's short pass finds Eriksen in a pocket of space on the edge of the box, but his low strike takes a slight deflection before creeping wide of the post.

Muhamed Besic of Everton pulls on the shirt of Roberto Soldado of Spurs after going to ground
16:32

32min: Kane this time does find the target, but after charging with menace at the Everton defence, his low strike is straight at Howard who collects with ease.

16:29

29min: Harry Kane can do no wrong in front of a Spurs crowd and just to show his confidence, from 20 yards he attempts to chip Howard, albeit his effort doesn't trouble the Everton stopper as the ball sails over.

Everton's midfield has lost its way since Spurs equalised.

16:26

24min: Spurs, from looking like on a on the brink of a collpase, have now found a second wind and are taking the game back to Everton. It's not one-way traffic but it's evened out the contest which has proven a rather entertaining one so far. I'll be surprised if this stays 1-1.

16:22
GOAL! TOTTENHAM 1-1 Everton

21min: And sort it out Spurs do. Harry Kane's shot is well saved by Tim Howard, but Christian Eriksen is first to the rebound, looping an effort back across goal and past a stranded Gareth Barry on the line. Game on!

16:21
From Sportsmail's Matt Barlow at White Hart Lane

16:18

18min: Spurs fans are sticking with their team for now with chants  of 'Come on you Spurs', but that goal has only spurred on Everton who are looking to double their lead.

Tottenham's fragile confidence looks there for the taking.

16:14
GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 EVERTON

15min: What a goal! Spurs clear Baines' free-kick, but Kevin Mirallas picks up possession, cutting on to his right foot before curling a 25-yard strike across goal and into the top corner. Unstoppable!

16:14

14min: But it's Everton who are looking dangerous as Mirallas is tripped on the corner of the Spurs box by Vlad Chiriches.

16:13

13min: Tottenham have started to take control of this game with some quick short passes which are leaving the home crowd purring.

It's not proving very dangerous, but it does look good - and that's some sort of improvement on recent White Hart Lane outings for the hosts.

16:10

10min: Marvellous work from Ross Barkley - who powers past Tottenham's central midfield, before his pass rebounds into the path of Romelu Lukaku.

The striker snatches at his low effort inside the box though, enabling Hugo Lloris to dive down to save.

16:08

7min: Fine work from the Everton forwards. Leighton Baines turns cleverly to avoid a challenge from Vlad Chiriches on the left, before laying the ball back to Kevin Mirallas on the edge of the box.

Nabil Bentaleb is quick to close down though, with the Belgian panicked into firing over a first time effort.

Roberto Soldado (left) of Spurs and Sylvain Distin of Everton battle for the ball
16:06

5min: So he isn't just a goal scorer. Harry kane's injection of pace sees him beat Sylvain Distin on the right, but his teasing lofted cross fails to pick out a Spurs player with only Roberto Soldado inside the box.

16:04

3min: An even enough start at White Hart Lane. Already there are signs of Seamus Coleman giving Christian Eriksen the slip down the Toffees' right flank but no chances as yet.
