NY deputy cursing at man on video is arrested

HALFMOON, N.Y. (AP) — A New York sheriff's deputy has been charged with harassment and official misconduct after a video posted on YouTube showed him cursing and apparently slapping a young man who had refused to let him search his car.

Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said Sgt. Shawn Glans was charged Monday after an investigation into the encounter Friday in Halfmoon. Zurlo said Glans resigned Monday, hours before a planned disciplinary hearing.

A video recorded by the man's friend shows Glans cursing and insisting he has a right to search the vehicle, which had a rifle inside.

A judge on Monday forbade Glans from having contact with the man, who hasn't been identified. A phone number listed for Glans was out of service.

Zurlo says a deputy who was with Glans on Friday is under internal investigation.
