'Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!' Buddy Franklin returns to social media to share loved-up snap with fiancée Jesinta Campbell after mental health battle

He stayed off social media while privately addressing mental health issues earlier this year.

But after making his return to work and speaking publicly about his struggle, Buddy Franklin took to Instagram to share an optimistic message on Friday.

The Sydney Swans player posted a loved-up snap with fiancée Jesinta Campbell, beaming as the model planted a kiss on his cheek in the black and white photograph.

In October Buddy retreated from the limelight, taking time off from his position at Sydney Swans to seek treatment for mental health issues.

At the time the star said little of his struggle, with his fiancee constantly speaking out in support of his decision to address the matter privately.

On December 1 the sportsman returned to training, participating in an interview on the Sydney Swans website.

Urging others who may be struggling with similar issues to seek help, Buddy said candidly: 'It was a tough time for myself, leading into the finals I was really struggling and I put my hand up and said I needed help, I'm so glad I did it.

'I took some time away and it was the best decision I've made.'

Gushing over Jesinta and the supportive role she has played throughout his ordeal, he added: 'I've got such a great support network around me in my partner and family and friends, the football club have been terrific in this tough time and I couldn't be more thankful.'

On the up: After taking three months off to address his mental health issues, the 28-year-old returned to work at The Sydney Swans at the beginning of December
