  • Michael Keeley received a $274 fine for holding a lightsaber while riding
  • He said the officer took 20 minutes 'took 20 minutes to decide on a fine'
  • The man from Caloundra, Sunshine Coast, is considering contesting fine
  • The fine was handed to Mr Keeley on the opening night of new Star Wars

A motorcyclist is feeling the full force of the law claiming to have been fined for riding with a Star Wars toy lightsaber in his hand.

Queensland man Michael Keeley has been scolded on the opening night of the latest instalment of the cult saga with a $274 fine for an unknown road rule: 'riding bike with lightsaber in the left hand'.

Mr Keeley, of Sunshine Coast suburb Caloundra, had been riding his motorbike with the green luminescent merchandise in his left hand around 11pm when he was pulled over by police.

‘Took the cop a good 20 minutes to decide on a fine. [He] looked through his phone and some old manual.’

‘Possibly the funniest ticket I’ve ever received,’ he wrote on Facebook. ‘Made for a pretty expensive midnight release for Star Wars.’

He told Daily Mail Australia that one of the officers was 'super nice' and 'even played with the lightsaber' while her partner searched for a way to fine Mr Keeley.

He said the officer told him the ticket was for not having control of his vehicle and riding with one hand.

He did not receive any points off his license, but will contest the fine after recovering from New Years Eve.

‘After looking up the law it seems you can hold something in one hand while riding legally, which is what the ticket is aimed at,’ he wrote. ‘Law actually says you only have to have one hand on the handlebar at any given time'

‘I guess he could say the force was against him,’ one person responded jokingly.

Most of those who’ve commented in the Facebook thread have been ‘impressed’ by the feat.

‘I'm just impressed. Look ma no hands haha!’ one person wrote.

Another disputed that Mr Keeley was not ‘in proper control’ at the time.

‘If you can carry a lightsaber while riding, you should get a medal,’ the man wrote.

However, another on Facebook said that riding with one hand was not the issue.

‘The light is a major distraction and can “dazzle” drivers per neon light beam on show rule,’ one person wrote.

‘The only thing they can do him for is changing lanes without indicating. Although you could argue that he was doing so with hand signals via the lightsaber,’ another wrote more optimistically.

‘Even though he booked you, you just know old mate got back to the station, and was like: “You ARE NOT going to believe what I booked some dude for tonight!!’ one person said.

‘Imagine what they deal with the opening night of Fast and Furious movies, bet they didn’t think anything out of the ordinary could happen on the opening night of a Star Wars movie lol.’

The image of him sitting stationary on the motorbike with the lightsaber in his right hand was taken before he was fined for riding with the merchandise in his left hand.

Mr Keeley said there was only ‘one other car on the road’ at the time.

On Sunday, the seventh Star Wars instalment became the fastest movie to pass the $1 billion mark in global box office sales, Disney said.

By Wednesday, The Force Awakens had raked in a total of $1.16 billion worldwide in just 13 days, according to Associated Press.

Earlier this month, super fans of the saga snapped up rarest merchandise on the planet for more than $500,000 at auction.

More than 600 items found new homes in the sale organised by Sotheby's and eBay, days before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
