A German city is in lockdown as armed police are hunting for a man suspected of planning a bomb attack on a German airport. Police in Saxony are desperately seeking the whereabouts of 22-year-old Syrian national Jaber Albakr - pictured left - in connection with explosives found in a flat in Chemnitz. He has been described by officials as 'dangerous'. A controlled explosion was carried out inside the flat which officers are pictured scaling (right). A spokesman for the state criminal police in Saxony, said officers had acted on intelligence it received last night and that their actions foiled a 'serious threat'. Residents have been told not to leave their homes and a massive operation involving road closures and evacuations are taking place in the city in Germany's east, lying to the south of Berlin and Leipzig, not far from the border with the Czech Republic

What The Apprentice according to Selina Waterman-Smith

How Britain's social prejudices should be celebrated

We'll consider more examples of outrageous snobbery shortly, but first let's recall the cautionary tale of Andrew Mitchell, the Rugby-educated Tory MP who in 2012 was accused of shouting the word 'plebs' at the policemen guarding the gates at 10 Downing Street. The ensuing scandal forced his resignation as government chief whip. As Mitchell discovered, one of the worst charges you can lay at anyone's door in the early 21st century is to suggest that they are a snob. And yet, I would argue, snobbery is key to our national life, an essential part of who we are. Without it, for example, the English novel would more or less cease to exist. Imagine Charles Dickens's Great Expectations without the social pretensions of his hero Pip. Or George Eliot's Middlemarch and William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair devoid of characters obsessed with putting on airs and graces.

Isle of Wight brickie on benefits conned his way from a derelict cottage to a stately home

Lounging in the back of a limousine as it cruises the streets of New York, Bill and Ann Green cannot stifle their smug smirks as they enjoy the high life. And in the 15 years since the photograph (inset) of that scene was taken, the glitz of their lifestyle has never suffered, certified by a host of lavish homes - from a stud farm in Newmarket with thoroughbred horses, to a hall set in 113 acres of land, once billed as Scotland's most expensive private home and, most recently, the Grade II-listed property that former prime minister Anthony Eden once called home (pictured). Not bad going for a bricklayer from the Isle of Wight whose first rung on the property ladder was a £13,000 derelict cottage (top left). But Green would settle for even that now -because, when he wakes up this morning, he'll be in a prison cell. Last week, the 60-year-old was jailed for six years for fraud, finally bringing to an end a scam worthy of a Hollywood film script. (Picture from top left, his first property, the derelict cottage in the Isle of Wight he bought in 1985, family home with first wife on same Island in 1991, in 2001 he left his previous life for Chale House, in 2002 the couple lease a £240,00-a-year property in Newmarket, before changing their name for £2.2million Middleton Hall, near Edinburgh in 2004.
