Detectives tipped off about THIRD possible site where Ben Needham could be buried as officers extend their stay in Kos to complete search

Ben Needham (pictured) disappeared on the Greek island of Kos in 1991 when he was just 21 months old

British police searching for Ben Needham have received a tip about a third site on the Greek island where his body could be buried giving fresh hope to his mother.

Officers have now extended their stay on Kos by at least another three days.

Detective Inspector Jon Cousins said today: 'I'm not leaving while there's still work to be done!'

He added the surprise new information, which they will start assessing soon, has given Ben's mother Kerry Needham 'some encouragement.'

DI Cousins, the lead officer from South Yorkshire Police, told Mail Online: 'She is very pleased with our team's commitment.

'It is an extremely distressing time for her and her family but she knows we are doing everything we can to bring her answers and she has expressed her thanks.

'We are continuing to work on two sites and have started digging into the ground below on the second site, working through the earth to spoil the existing compressed and crushed material.'

The determined officer, speaking in front of wasteland where a digger driver may have hidden the toddler's body 25 years ago, said: 'It has got to be done. I want to leave Kos only when I can give the family the answers they are hoping to hear.

'This is a living investigation and new witnesses could come forward at any moment providing us with new information.

DI Cousins said a passing motorcyclist had told his dig team late yesterday there was a potential new site to check.

South Yorkshire Police have begun excavating soil deposits (pictured) at a second search site, approximately 1km from the farmhouse where Ben was last seen. A passing motorcyclist told the dig team late yesterday there was a potential new site to check

Digger driver Konstantinos 'Dino' Barkas, now deceased, is suspected of burying 21 month old Ben on an illegal tip site in Iraklis after accidentally crushing him to death at his grandad's nearby farmhouse in July 1991.

The new witness told officers that Mr Barkas often dumped his rubbish at another local site up the hill.

A guarded DI Cousins said: 'We are continuing to focus on the two existing sites but we cannot disregard new information we receive.

'We need to make more inquiries before we start checking the third site. 'Our priority is to concentrate on work on the two current locations. We are lifting all the earth behind us.

'We're going to work through it in similar fashion to what we've done up at the farmhouse.'

The 25-strong team, will remain on Kos for nearly another week, until at least next Friday.

The lead officer confirmed: 'We have extended our stay here by another three days.'

Detective Inspector Jon Cousins of South Yorkshire Police (pictured) said the dig was prompted by information that digger driver Konstantinos Barkas was seen depositing rubble at the site 25 years ago

He added: 'The team are 100 per cent behind this. And every single one of them, including the volunteers, are adamant that they are staying for this period of time.'

Mrs Needham, 43, from Sheffield, who had been told by police 'to fear the worst', is staying with her parents at an undisclosed location near the island.

Officers began excavation at a second search area close to where Ben disappeared yesterday.

DI Cousins said initial work at this site revealed the underlying ground is compacted material deposited over the last 30 years.

He added the team would remove this layer in the same way they excavated the first site they focused on in their two weeks on the island.
