Liverpool moved up to second in the Premier League after James Milner's 84th-minute penalty secured a 2-1 comeback victory over Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea broke the deadlock after eight minutes as Liverpool's weakness from set pieces was once more exposed with Leroy Fer prodding home from close range despite claims for offside.

But Roberto Firmino brought the visitors level with a firm downward header nine minutes into the restart, and after the Brazilian was bundled to the ground by Angel Rangel, James Milner kept his cool to slot home the penalty to seal a fourth straight Premier League win.

FULL-TIME: Swansea 1-2 Liverpool

The full-time whistle is blown and Liverpool secure a comeback victory against Premier League strugglers Swansea.

They were made to work for the three points after Leroy Fer opened the scoring but second-half goals from Roberto Firmino and James Milner seal yet another win for Jurgen Klopp's men.

14:21
Van der Hoorn misses a sitter for Swansea

90+2 mins: Heartbreak for Swansea as they looked certain to grab a last-gasp equaliser but defender van der Hoorn somehow misses the target from six yards out. He was unmarked there and should be scoring.

14:20

90+1 mins: Origi, the Liverpool substitute, selfishly opts to shoot rather than playing in Milner and his tame effort is comfortably saved by Fabianski.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool fans are rocking the Liberty Stadium as 'You'll Never Walk Alone' echoes around the arena.

14:11
GOAL: Swansea 1-2 LIVERPOOL (Milner 84 mins)

Mr Dependable himself confidently steps up to dink his penalty into the back of the net and Liverpool have come from a goal down to claim the lead with just six minutes to play.

It was a good call from Michael Olivier to award the penalty after Rangel caught Firmino from behind after a defensive mix-up. Questions will be raised over Barrow's clearance but Rangel needlessly fouled the Brazilian.

14:10
PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL

Nightmare for Swansea as Barrow's failed clearance sees Rangel bring down Firmino.

James Milner of Liverpool heads the ball clear
14:09

80 mins: Matip's header from Milner's corner is deflected out and the former Manchester City player has another opportunity to deliver the ball into the box.

But Swansea, as they have done throughout this afternoon's match, defend brilliantly and are able to regroup after clearing the ball away from danger.

14:07

79 mins: Coutinho does brilliantly to create some space on the edge of Swansea's box and his shot is deflected out for a corner. Ten minutes to go.

Dejan Lovren of Liverpool (L) and Jordi Amat battle for possession in the air
14:06

77 mins: Swansea are beginning to pile the pressure on Liverpool now and we're teed up for a terrific finish at the Liberty Stadium.

14:05

76 mins: Swansea have been on the backfoot for the majority of this half but they almost regain the lead - and perhaps should have!

The ball is swung into the box from the corner and when Karius, the Liverpool goalkeeper, comes flying out, it almost deflects in but the Reds can breather a sigh of relief.

14:02

73 mins: Liverpool win yet another corner but Milner's ball into the box is well defended by Swansea, who are clinging onto a point at the Liberty Stadium.

In the build-up to that corner, Barrow took a huge risk by producing a sliding challenge in the box to beat Milner to the ball. Fortunately for the Swans sub, it was well-timed.

13:57

68 mins: Another excellent example of Swansea's impressive defensive performance this afternoon as Naughton throws his body on the line to turn Mane's goal-bound shot out for a corner.

Sturridge meets the delivery with a header but it's wide of the goal. Just over 20 minutes of normal time to go and what a match we've been treated to today. But will we have a winner?

13:55

67 mins: It's a wave of Liverpool attacks now and this time it's Clyne who tries his luck from distance - but the defender's shot is well saved by Fabianski.

13:54

66 mins: Swansea win a throw-in and have an opportunity to grab a breather but it doesn't take Liverpool too long to regain the ball.

Milner, playing at left back, carries the ball forward but can't get on the end of Coutinho's poor pass.

13:52

64 mins: Liverpool are knocking on the door now and Sturridge goes close to giving the Reds the lead after a lovely team move.

Firmino finds Coutinho and the Brazilian sends in an early cross but Sturridge, with Amat putting him under pressure, can't get a decisive touch on the ball.

13:51
Swansea make another change

63 mins: Two quick-fire changes from Swansea as Ki comes on for Britton.

13:49
Substitution for Swansea

61 mins: Swansea make their first substitution of the match with Barrow replacing Routledge. Something had to change for the hosts because Liverpool are beginning to dominate this match.

13:41
GOAL: Swansea 1-1 LIVERPOOL (Firmino 54 mins)

GAME ON!

Swansea had been riding their luck since the restart and Liverpool grab a deserved equaliser through Firmino. When Swansea failed to clear their lines for a free-kick, Henderson heads the ball back into the box and the Brazilian, clearly onside, heads home unmarked to level the scores.

13:41
Britton booked for Swansea

53 mins: Britton knows he's the wrong side of Mane and the Swansea midfielder brings down the Liverpool star. Oliver deservedly books the midfielder.

13:40

51 mins: The Liberty Stadium is rocking as the home fans get behind their team who have so far been very impressive this afternoon. But you worry they'll begin to tire and the Reds, as they have shown this season, are threatening on the break.

13:38

49 mins: Sigurdsson appeals for a free-kick after claiming he was pulled back by a Liverpool play but Michael Olivier waves away his protests. Very entertaining start to this second half - both teams pushing for the game's second goal.

13:36

48 mins: End to end action at the Liberty as Fabianski prevents Mane from scoring before the Swans then go on the attack but nobody can get on the end of Routledge's clever pull-back.

13:35

47 mins: Fabianski is forced into making his first real save of the match after Firmino lets fly with a long-range shot. The Pole did well there to take the sting out of the ball and avoid parrying it into a dangerous area.

13:34

46 mins: Liverpool, as expected, are immediately on the attack but when Clyne's clever ball into the box finds Sturridge, the striker is unable to get the ball under control and it goes out for a goal kick.

13:32
SECOND HALF: Swansea get us back underway at the Liberty Stadium

No half-time substitutions for either team as Swansea get us back underway and will attack Liverpool's goal from left to right. So far Swansea have been terrific but will they have the energy to go the distance here?

HALF-TIME: Swansea 1-0 Liverpool

Swansea go into the break with a deserved lead after Leroy Fer's early opener. Liverpool simply haven't turned up this afternoon and will no doubt get the hairdryer treatment from Jurgen Klopp at half-time.

13:16

45+1 mins: The Liberty Stadium is rocking as Swansea prepare to head into the break with a narrow 1-0 lead. And it's looking likely as we enter the final minute of this half.

13:15
TWO MINUTES ADDED TIME
13:15

44 mins: Sturridge does well to win Liverpool a corner and it's captain Henderson who sends the ball into the box. But Fer gets his head to it and clears.

Liverpool's Jordan Henderson is shown a yellow card by referee Michael Oliver
13:14

43 mins: Swansea have a free-kick in a very dangerous position on the edge of Liverpool's box and it's Sigurdsson who steps up. The Iceland man does indeed shoot but Karius easily saves,

13:13

41 mins: Liverpool on top now and are knocking on the door - but Swansea are standing firm at the moment. This will be a testing few minutes for the hosts as they bid to cling on to this narrow lead heading into half-time.

13:12

39 mins: Tremendous block from Swansea defender Amat to prevent Mane from levelling the scores at the Liberty Stadium. The forward lets fly but the Swans' man dives in with a perfectly-timed challenge to keep the score 1-0.

13:10
Sturridge booked for diving

38 mins: That's the Daniel Sturridge we don't like to see - but one in which we see far too often. The striker runs into the box but in an attempt to win a penalty, the striker goes down under the smallest bit of pressure.

Michael Olivier deservedly books the former Chelsea striker - who is booed every time he touches the ball now.

13:08
Cork booked for Swansea

37 mins: Jack Cork is the first Swansea player to be booked after catching Nathaniel Clyne with a late challenge.

13:07

36 mins: Liverpool are beginning to pile the pressure on the hosts now before Borja does well to win a free-kick for his team and the hosts can regroup.

Before that, Sturridge was clear down the left wing but his floated cross is easily cleared by Swansea.

13:06

34 mins: That's more like the Liverpool who have enjoyed a good start to the new campaign. Liverpool's midfielder patiently pass the ball around in the middle of the park before Clyne's cross is deflected out for their first corner of the match.

Henderson takes a quick corner and the ball eventually finds its way to Lovren but his attempted volley is blocked.

Borja Baston of Swansea City attempts to score a header
13:02

31 mins: So far so good for Swansea with Leroy Fer's fourth goal of the season the difference between these two teams. It's been a nightmare start for Liverpool with star man Adam Lallana forced to go for an early shower after picking up an injury.

Adam Lallana goes down injured
13:00

29 mins: We're approaching the half hour mark here at the Liberty Stadium and Swansea have been thoroughly impressive.

Liverpool, it has to be said, have defensively been pretty poor but the Swans are enjoy a majority of possession and look like they could score every time they get close to the Reds' goal.

12:59
From Sportmail's Riath Al-Samarrai at the Liberty Stadium

Borja has missed two very good headed chances so far. Liverpool, if it's not been said already, are not good at defending.

Swansea City's Borja Baston looks dejected after a missed chance
12:57
Borja Baston misses ANOTHER sitter

25 mins: Borja misses another glorious chance to open his Swansea account. This one was slightly trickier than the other chance he missed as he sees the ball late but he should perhaps be at least hitting the target from there.

Instead, the striker send his header from eight yards well wide of the Liverpool goal.

12:56
Henderson booked for Liverpool

24 mins: Jordan Henderson becomes the first player to be booked after a needless foul on Jack Cork.

12:54
Sturridge comes on for Lallana

23 mins: He was always going to come on but Klopp has been forced to introduce Sturridge earlier than he'd have wanted following an injury to Lallana.

Plenty of time for the England man to make an impact...

12:53

22 mins: Liverpool, playing with 10 men after Lallana made his way to the team's dressing room, are almost through with Mane but when Firmino receives the ball, the Swans are quick to put him under pressure and receive the ball.

Klopp delivers instructions to his players
12:51

19 mins: Lallana has indeed made his way down the tunnel and it looks like his afternoon is over with less than 20 minutes played. Heartbreak for the former Southampton man who has enjoyed an exceptional start to this campaign.

12:50

18 mins: After a entertaining opening to this match, the tempo has slowed down slightly with Liverpool growing into this clash. Adam Lallana has an injury problem and it looks like he may have to come off.

Daniel Sturridge has stepped up his warm-up on the touchline.

Daniel Sturridge of Liverpool looks on while sitting on the bench
12:44

13 mins: It's a spirited start from Swansea and Liverpool are really struggling to keep hold of the ball at the moment.

The Swans are playing the Reds at their own game by pressing high at the pitch - with Jack Cork in particular putting Liverpool's players under pressure at every opportunity.

12:43

12:41

10 mins: An early goal is just what this game needed and we now have a match on our hands. Liverpool will have to come out their blocks now and will no doubt do their best to claw their way back into this clash with an equaliser.

12:37
GOAL: SWANSEA 1-0 Liverpool (Fer 8 mins)

They've had several warnings but Liverpool are made to pay for their slow start to this game as Leroy Fer opens the scoring with a tap-in.

Borja gets on the end of a teasing ball into the box to knock it down to the midfielder and the former QPR man is there to poke home the opener for the struggling Swans.

12:37
From Sportmail's Riath Al-Samarrai at the Liberty Stadium

Given his future could rest on this result, Francesco Guidolin has been fairly calm about the place today. He was just given a chorus of his name from the crowd, many of whom hold the club's hierarchy more responsible for the malaise at the Liberty Stadium.

12:36
Horrible miss from Borja Baston

5 mins: That's a nightmare miss from the striker making his full Swansea debut. Routledge sends in a lovely cross into the box and Borja Baston is unmarked but somehow sends his header over the bar.

Should be scoring from there!

12:35

4 mins: Wayne Routledge puts pressure on Liverpool centre back Dejan Lovren and the defender is forced to boot the ball out for a throw-in. The ball is eventually delivered into the box but there's not a Swansea player around and Karius easily collects.

Liverpool's Simon Mignolet on the bench before the match
12:33

3 mins: Swansea are being pegged back in their own half in these opening exchanges as Liverpool enjoy possession.

Jordan Henderson, the Liverpool captain, looks to release Adam Lallana down the right flank but there's too much on it and it goes out for a Swansea goal-kick.

Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet continues to play a watching role as Loris Karius is once again Jurgen Klopp's chosen man in-between the sticks.

Francesco Guidolin knows position as Swansea boss is under serious threat

Francesco Guidolin accepts he could lose his job as Swansea manager if his side fail to beat Liverpool on Saturday.

Guidolin has come under increasing pressure with Swansea only one place above the relegation zone after failing to win a Premier League game since the opening day of the season.

Ryan Giggs - recently of Manchester United - and former United States boss Bob Bradley have been linked with the Liberty post, with the visit of Liverpool understood to be critical to the Italian's future.

Asked if he could be out of a job if Swansea fail to beat high-flying Liverpool, Guidolin replied: 'It could happen. Maybe.

'It's not easy (to beat Liverpool). But if we win on Saturday for the period of the international break you don't speak any more about my position.

'But my position is not important, Swansea's (league) position is important, and we must get a result.'

Can Swansea get back to winning ways?

The Swans are bidding to win for the first time since the opening day of the season, where they secured a narrow 1-0 win over Premier League newcomers Burnley. But since that win, they've lost four out of five league matches and are just one point above the drop zone.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have enjoyed an impressive start to the new season and are fifth in the league. Jurgen Klopp's men have won four of their six games but suffered a shock loss against the Clarets, their only defeat of the season thus far. Only Manchester City have scored more league goals, too - with the Reds netting 16.

Should make for an entertaining match...

Swansea vs Liverpool: Recent results between pair

Swansea's 3-1 victory in May 2016 ended a run of eight games in all competitions without a win against Liverpool (D2 L6).

Liverpool have won only one of their five visits to Liberty Stadium in the Premier League (D2 L2) – 1-0 in March 2015.

Daniel Sturridge has been directly involved in six goals in his six PL appearances against Swansea for Liverpool (four goals, two assists).

Liverpool have found the back of the net in each of their last seven Premier League clashes with Swansea, netting 18 goals; although only four have arrived away from home.

No team has scored more away goals in the Premier League in 2016 than Liverpool (26, level with Tottenham).

Fernando Llorente is the 61st Spaniard to score in the Premier League and is currently one of 17 to have a single goal, alongside the likes of Fran Merida, Xisco and Kepa.
