The 34-year-old had been considered by Leicester City prior to their appointment of Eduardo Macia while Manchester City are also among his admirers.

Marseille are also considering Manchester United's France-based scout and former Nottingham Forest midfielder David Friio as an alternative option.

Mitchell had followed Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham in November 2014 after building a substantial reputation for finding players at Southampton.

He is largely credited for the south coast club’s hugely successful recruitment policy developed from when he joined them in 2012 and which sustained them in the early years of their promotion to the Premier League.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy brought in Mitchell as part of his club restructuring plan and faced a fight with Southampton, where he oversaw their recruitment and the analysis department, for his services.
