AFL legend Dane Swan is expected to announce his retirement on Tuesday, ending an illustrious and colourful 14-year career.

Swan, who won a premiership with Collingwood in 2010 and the Brownlow Medal in 2011,  has never fully recovered from a severe foot injury in round one against the Sydney Swans.

The 32-year-old broke three bones and also ruptured the Lisfranc ligament in the incident, meaning he will be eligible to receive a payout of about $400,000 under the AFL collective bargaining agreement.

The rules allow players who suffer new career-ending injuries access to 50 per cent of their final years contract.

Starting his career clean skinned and fresh faced in 2003 the transformation of Swan has been almost as impressive as his football career.

Swan is now covered in tattoos and dons a beard that highlights his rugged persona.

In a career spanning 258 games not only has Swan won a premiership (2010) he has also been named the games best player when he won the 2011 Brownlow medal.

But for all his on-field success Swan has also been involved in his his fair share of controversy.

Swan's first brush with the law was in his debut year when he was arrested after an altercation in federation square - an incident that nearly ended his career.

Swan was spared by then coach Mick Malthouse and given a second chance but the incident cost him a share of $100,000 after the victim sued him and two others.

In 2010 Swan was punched in the mouth and suffered minor damage to two teeth in an unprovoked nightclub incident.

In 2015 a pub part owned by the star was destroyed by a panicked builder who was undertaking renovations at the establishment.

The builder claimed that he burnt the Albion Hotel down as he needed more time to finish the renovations

In January this year Collingwood president Eddie McGuire labelled Swan an 'idiot' after he reportedly sent nude selfies to female fans.
