Third house searched in baby deaths mystery

Police investigating the death of three babies are continuing their search of a third property involved in the murder inquiry.

South Wales Police detectives are continuing to question grandmother Ann Mahoney, 64, on suspicion of murder after they were given an extra 36 hours to hold her.

She was arrested at her home in Forsythia Close, on the Gurnos estate, Merthyr Tydfil, on Tuesday.

Her arrest was originally linked to the discovery of a baby's body in a suitcase in the attic of a house in nearby Penyfan View on March 20.

Then police announced they had discovered the suspected remains of two other babies following a search at her current address.

Now shocked residents on the Gurnos estate are facing the prospect of a second day of police searches at a third property.

More than 100 people watched as a specialist police team arrived at the Crabapple Close property where uniformed officers had been keeping guard.

The property's overgrown garden was also studied and the grass cut back for what appears to be a more thorough search outside.

The house, which is rented to a tenant, belongs to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, but was previously home to the pensioner.

Ms Mahoney, believed to be a retired nurse, is an enthusiastic community activist and well known volunteer. She is also a governor at a local infant school and was previously voted Citizen of the Year by the local police crime prevention panel.
