It wasn't quite the reception that the Queen has come to expect from her visits.

Instead of bunting and wellwishers, she was greeted by police cordons and a bloodied corpse.

But all was not quite as it seemed at the college in Windsor - the murder scene had been set up by forensic science students.

A man's body lay on the floor of the laboratory, his blood spattered on the walls and the floor.

The monarch, accompanied by Prince Philip, looked on as the students conducted examinations.

Then the Royals enquired after the corpse. Rachael Upton, 18, said: 'We told the Duke we think it was a female who carried out the murder because the shoes we have prints of are only a size five. He seemed impressed.'

The Queen was opening East Berkshire College, which moved to a new campus last year.

It has about 500 full-time students studying A-levels as well as vocational programmes, and about 2,000 part-time students.

The principal, Jean Robertson, said: 'It was an absolute pleasure to show the Queen round because she was obviously so pleased to meet our students and talk about their studies and their aspirations.'
