'Want to know what happens when a Labrador eats a kilo of caster sugar?' Pet owner proves that dogs will eat ANYTHING with her stomach-churning cautionary tale

  • Mumsnet user BellaGoth told how her mischievous Labrador had eaten an entire bag of sugar while she left her shopping on the kitchen table
  • Other shared similar tales, from condoms to cakes and even nappies
  • One woman told how her pooch had eaten the entire Christmas turkey

Pet owners have been sharing the ridiculous - and at times terrifying - things their pets have eaten when their backs have been turned.

The discussion kicked off after Mumsnet user BellaGoth told how her mischievous Labrador had eaten an entire bag of sugar while she left her shopping on the kitchen table to feed her daughter.

She reassured fellow mums that although the pooch was 'fine' now he had been sick all over her bed, duvet, mattress and carpet - and she was now in need of a new bed.

'It did not cross my mind for a second that dog would split open the bag of sugar all over the living room carpet and eat the vast majority of it,' she wrote.

'I was wrong. Obviously I called the vet straight away, who told me he would be fine, just might be a bit hyper.'

Fellow mums began to share similar stories of pet disasters in a bid to make her feel better, with Northernlurker saying a six-month-old puppy had eaten 'the best part of a fruit cake' after it was left on a table.

'He was very greedy but it nearly killed him,' she recalled. 'Literally sick as a dog.'

One user said their brother's German Shepherd had eaten the contents of the fridge on Christmas Eve,

'The whole lot, the whole turkey even,' the wrote. 'He was sick though....lots and lots sick.'

Nanasueathome had a similar story, explaining how her English Setter had 'opened the fridge and ate the contents.

'Think butter, cheese, cooked meats, vegetables, sausage, bacon,' she wrote. Remarkably the canine apparently wasn't sick afterwards.

'She's also [fond] of going in the bin and in the past has not being adverse to eating the contents of a nappy,' she added.

While Hoppinggreen admitted to being amazed when their pooch suffered 'no ill effects whatsoever' after her Golden Retriever ate a frozen turkey had that been left to defrost overnight.

'Apart from us having a cr** Christmas dinner,' she quipped.

POISONED AT HOME

More than 10,000 dogs a year are poisoned after eating everyday items such as paracetamol and chocolate, a pet charity warned last year.

The Kennel Club says seemingly harmless foods such as hot cross buns and onions can be killers – and is urging owners to be alert to the threat.

Around 56,000 dogs were treated for poisoning between 2010 and 2014, according to figures compiled by the charity and the Veterinary Poisons Information Service. Of those, 470 dogs died.

One of the most stomach-churning stories came from Bouncearound who said a friend's dog had eaten a box of condoms.

She explained: 'Luckily there were only four left in the box but we did joke that he was trying to bag the poop up in advance as they exited together.

'Dog was completely unharmed and she didn't realise he'd eaten them until they reappeared!'

Similarly, one woman's dog ate the remnants of burst balloons found in parks and on the streets. She commented: 'It's colourful and at least I can see we she has s***.'
