Say cheesy! The hilariously awkward pictures when pets take pride of place in the family photo album

They are often treated like one of the family - but you can imagine that in these special snapshots, some pets really wish they weren't.

Not content with containing the misery of awkward family photos to those who can voice a complaint, these fun-loving pet owners have got their dogs, cats, parrots, horses and even pet snake in on the action.

The results are a set of hideous, but more importantly hilarious, pictures of owners and their beloved animals.

As the authors of the book, Mike Bender and Doug Chernack quite rightly put it: 'We adore our pets, but let’s face it - sometimes L-O-V-E makes us go a little overboard.'

The pair are also the authors of Awkward Family Photos, a collection of some of the most excruciating poses, hairstyles and fashion choices ever to be captured in print.

In this often jaw-dropping montage, you will see the family who have decided to position themselves grinning on the floor, heads together, with a snake draped across their necks.

There is also the artistic portrait - like the shirtless gentleman, eyes closed, clutching a horrified looking puppy.

In fact, there are several pet owners who have taken the concept of 'being at one with nature' quite seriously and embraced nudity for the photo - like the couple covering their modesty with only the help of their alarmed cats.

All the animals pictured are no doubt deeply loved and cared for, but as every family member knows, this counts for little when it comes to the embarrassment relatives will unwittingly heap on you.

You are strongly urged not to take similar shots at home but if the lure of the personal Christmas card becomes too much then don't be surprised to find yourself at awkwardfamilypetphotos.com some day soon.
