'Dear God will you please take care of my dog': Heartwarming story of girl who mailed letter to heaven... and post office worker who wrote back to her

When Abbey, the beloved 14-year-old dog of the Scrivener family died, one little girl's grief was eased in the most touching of fashions.

Telling her parents that she wanted to write a letter to God, four-year-old Meredith dictated a note to her mother and together they traveled down to their post office in Brook Hollow, Texas to post it.

Two weeks later to their amazement, the family returned home to find a package wrapped in gold on their front porch addressed to 'Mer' and signed 'God, and one of his special angels.'

Reaching out: Meredith Scrivener, now seen around 10 years of age, mailed a letter addressed to Heaven after her dog died, hoping God would continue to take care of her

Inside the mysterious package was a book titled 'When a Pet Dies' by Fred Rogers and note, clearly sent in reply to the little girl's plea to God to 'please take care of my dog'

'Dear Meredith,' read the attached letter.

'Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog.

'Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

'I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

'Love, God.'

Parents Joy and Greg were stunned as well as touched that someone at their post office would go through so much trouble to help their little girl.

'I thought that would be the end of it,' her mother Joy Scrivener later told the United Methodist Reporter about the first letter sent by Meredith.

Since that day in 2006, Joy has received a letter from the 'angel' who sent the letter and book. I've met the 'angel' and wrote a column about her on a different topic without identifying her.

Child's loss: Abbey the dog was 14-years-old when she died, completely overwhelming the four-year-old girl whose mother suggested she write a letter to God to console her

Meredith, however, was less than surprised by the special delivery, according to her mom.

'When she received the package, she was happy, but she wasn't surprised,' she said. 'There was no doubt in Meredith's mind that her letter was going to heaven.'

Since that day in the summer of 2006, word of the Scrivener's story has circulated widely online, with the story spinning into what many believed to have been a sugar-coated fable.

Instead, now approximately 10-years old, Meredith is said to have recovered from her heart-breaking loss, and to have since welcomed the addition of a collie and terrier into their household.

'She's doing great,' Mrs Scrivener told My San Antonio in 2010. 'She still has a big heart for animals.'

MEREDITH'S LETTER TO HEAVEN AND THE HEARTWARMING REPLY

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her, you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.

Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.

By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

Love,

God

Oh, this one makes me heart ache, but in a beautiful way. What a lovely letter for Meredith to write, and what a lovely thing for the PO worker to do. There should be more "angels" like that. On another note entirely, what a gorgeous photo of Meredith.

Wow, an actual feel good story about a pet, rather than one about some poor creature who got horribly maimed or injured, like you usually print.

imagine not having another dumb story about Rihanna or Ms. Kardashian but a lovely story about a grieving child and yes: GOD. Thank you for printing this story. Anilmals are an important part of many peoples lives. PS: I don't care about all the non-believers that will read this, get over it!!!!!

How kind of the 'Angel' to respond. How thoughtful and kind their heart is. You've helped to ease the pain of that little girl. Those of us who have lost pets know the pain. You deserve so much for your kindness and I wish you every happiness and good luck in life. xx

Something about this seems creepy to me. I understand when people do this sort of thing pretending there's a Santa Claus, because we all know there isn't so he can't really respond and we just pretend for the kids. But pretending to be God? How can religious people go along with this and think it's okay? I mean, it's like admitting God is like Santa Claus, only make believe, so it's okay to pretend to be him for the kids. We know God wasn't really going to see the letter and he wasn't really going to write back so we pretended to trick the child into thinking it was God. Very strange.

I have had this story on my fridge for a couple of years and it reminds me that there are good people out there who care.
