Mum's the word! Ewan McGregor, 45, steps out with his proud mother Carol at screening of new film American Pastoral in London

They say there's no bond like the one shared between a mother and her son.

And, clearly, that's something Ewan McGregor and believes in - as he proved when he stepped out with his beloved matriarch on Saturday.

The pair were spotted leaving the VIP screening of his new project, American Pastoral, at the Bulgari Hotel in London.

The critically-acclaimed star looked delighted to be out with his parent at the bash, which officially launches his directorial debut.

Dressing for the autumn, he walked a fine line between smart/casual in a black and grey ensemble.

Consisting of skinny jeans with a crew-neck t-shirt and cardigan, he wrapped himself up in a heavy-duty winter coat for a stylish aesthetic.

Looking younger than his years, he  was on fine sartorial form - and clearly gets his good genes from his mother.

The silver-haired lady - a retired deputy head teacher of Kingspark School in Dundee - looked classically glam, yet age-appropriate.

Not that she was the only loved one there, of course - Ewan's father, James McGregor, was also in attendance.

Keen to support their son in his latest project, they also joined celebrities such as Cressida Bonas and Trainspotting director Danny Boyle.

Last month, Ewan admitted to being 'very nervous' about making his directorial debut with the movie adaptation of Philip Roth's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, also sees McGregor in the lead role of the hard-working man in late 1960s America whose family begins to fall apart after his daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) becomes politically radicalised.

Speaking at a press conference in the Canadian city at the time, McGregor said he had spent years waiting for the right directorial opportunity to emerge but felt pressure in interpreting Roth's work on the big screen.

'I was very nervous. I think it's a massive responsibility to take on - a responsibility to the producers, a responsibility to Philip Roth, a responsibility to everybody who had read that novel and who liked that novel,' he added.

He also wanted to make sure the film 'represented me in some way.'

Thankfully, McGregor said Roth has seen the film and reacted positively to the adaptation of his 1997 masterwork, voted one of Time magazine's 100 greatest novels.
