So much for a short back and sides: Wacky hairstyles go on display for fantasy-themed competition

Blow-drying your hair can be difficult enough but try re-creating these outrageous styles.

Even Rapunzel would be jealous of these fantasy-themed creations which look they have came straight out of a fairytale.

The designs were created for the seventh International Festival of Hairdressing Art, Fashion and Design in Kiev, Ukraine.

The annual competition, known as Crystal Angel, is organised by the Higher Education Institution Kiev Academy of Hairdressers and began in 2001.

Hairdressers from around the world gather to create these intricate styles.

This year's designs have been the most adventurous yet with models strutting down the catwalk with hairstyles coiffed into shapes which look out of this world.

One even resembled a fish.

Cue the "You can't go to the shops looking like that" comments. As a hairdresser myself, I find it quite offensive that people who obviously know nothing about hairdressing make snide and belittling comments. It's a competition, these styles aren't meant for people to try and recreate at home, not that any of you would be able to if you tried to. These hairdressers have obviously planned, prepared and put a lot of work into these hairstyles, and it really shows, they all look great and I hope that one day I will be good enough to do the same kind of work.
