The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley and wife Torrey DeVitto file for divorce after two years of marriage

Paul Wesley and Torrey DeVitto are set to divorce.

The Vampire Diaries star and the Pretty Little Liars actress - who met in 2007 on the set of Killer Movie - have decided to call it quits on their marriage of just over two years.

Paul's representative has said that the couple have split 'amicably' and are intent on remaining friends.

The rep told People.com: ‘Paul and Torrey have decided to amicably split. They will continue to remain good friends.’

The couple were married in a private ceremony in New York City in April 2011 and Torrey soon joined the cast of The Vampire Diaries that same year as recurring character Dr. Meredith Fell.

Paul, 31, has previously spoken out about working with his 29-year-old spouse in the December 2012 issue of Glow magazine.

Wesley explained that being in the same city was good for their marriage: ‘It's fantastic because otherwise we'd be 2000 miles away, Los Angeles and Georgia, so it's very nice to be in the same geographical location.’

Wesley and Torrey, whose relationship spanned over six years, have another television drama in common as the two have guest starred, on separate episodes, of ABC's Army Wives.

Meanwhile, Paul and Torrey's split comes soon after their Vampire Diaries co-stars Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev ended their three-year romance, with friends blaming the 10-year age gap between Nina, 24 and Ian, 34.

A source said: ‘There was no mean spiritedness behind either of their motives for ending it.

‘The relationship kind of brewed out of a friendship and the fact that they had to get into a romance for the show. The breakup was inevitable.'

Adding: ‘I think she decided she wanted to experience other things.’
