Reunited! Matrix stars Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne star in first trailer for John Wick: Chapter 2

The first trailer for Keanu Reeves' return as vigilante John Wick debuted at New York Comic Con on Saturday.

And much to fans delight, there was a special present - with Keanu's The Matrix co-star Laurence Fishburne popping up at the end of the clip to exchange a few funny words with the star.

The pair reunited for John Wick: Chapter 2,  17 years after lighting up the screen together in the first of the groundbreaking Matrix trilogy of films.

In the new trailer for John Wick: Chapter 2, Reeves' titular assassin character walks across a rooftop toward Fishburne's bearded character, The Bowler King.

'John Wick,' vamps The Bowler King, stroking a dove he's cradling in his hands, 'you're not very good at retiring.'

'I'm working on it,' says Wick drily - not that the rest of the trailer provides much evidence of that.

The preview opens with Wick in Rome, a tailor fitting him for a 'tactical' suit as he prepares to attend a 'social' engagement that requires him to be festooned with weapons from stem to stern. 

He enters the party alongside the dog he procures at the end of the first film. A beagle he owns earlier on in the 2014 feature gets slaughtered, launching the plot.

Once the plot flings him to New York City, Ian McShane's character Winston - a holdover from the first film - warns Wick: 'You have no idea what's coming.'

He finds out what's coming by way of a string of shootouts. Crowds scatter as the leading man and another besuited assassin played by Common stare each other down, then begin firing at each other.

'You want a war,' Wick asks someone off-camera, 'or do you want to just give me a gun?' At another point, just to underline the menace for good measure, he growls: 'Whoever comes, I'll kill them all.'

As the action unfolds, Wick's misadventures include a engaging in a gunfight in a sewer and a fistfight with Common in the New York Subway. subway. 

At one point, he swerves his car near Times Square just in time for an oncoming motorcycle to glance off it.

The original sleeper hit John Wick sees its hit-man protagonist driven from retirement after the death of his wife Helen (Bridget Moynihan).

Along with Moynihan and McShane, the sequel will feature the return of multiple supporting players, such as John Leguizamo as chop show owner Aurelio and David Patrick Kelly as crime scene cleaner Charlie.

Ruby Rose, Peter Stormare and Riccardo Scamarcio join the ranks of Common and Fishburne as new additions for the first sequel.

In The Matrix (1998), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003), Fishburne plays Morpheus, the man who liberates Reeves' leading man Neo from the illusory 'Matrix' and plunges him into the real, dystopic world.

Variety confirmed Fishburne's appearance in John Wick: Chapter 2 last December. The film will open in America on 10 February 2017 and in Britain a week later.
