The Nebraska teenager who stabbed and beat a fellow pupil with a hammer in the bathroom of her Catholic high school last month was intent on mass murder according to a state prosecutor.

Sarah Piccolo, 16, intended to 'kill as many people as she could' according to Deputy Lancaster County Attorney Bruce Prenda as he argued against transferring the teens case to juvenile court today.

Prenda alleged that Piccolo carefully planned her vicious assault on victim, Ellen Kopetzky, 17, down to an escape route as evidenced by her fleeing 250 miles away to Kansas after cutting Kopetzsky on her face and hands and beat the back of her head with a hammer.

Piccolo faces charges of first-degree assault and use of a deadly weapon following the October 7th attack at Lincoln's Pius X High School.

Piccolo has pleaded not guilty to the attack and her defense lawyer, DeAnn stover said that her 16-year-old client has no criminal record, and she needs the treatment resources available in juvenile court.

'It's apparent this was also a huge cry for help,' Stover said according to Omaha.com

Kopetsky needed stitches and staples to close the wounds to her face and hands and went through a brain scan to check for brain damage.

Kopetzky 'faces a lifetime with emotional and physical scars for that one moment at school,' Prenda said as Piccolo burst into tears.

The motivation for the attack is still mystifying prosecutors, who have not yet found any connection between the two girls that would explain the assault.

There was no evidence of a troubled home-life, bullying or abuse.

'The evidence suggests this was a very troubled 16-year-old girl, and no one anticipated this behavior,' Prenda said.

If convicted as an adult, Piccolo faces a minimum of one year in prison to a maximum of 50 years on each count.

Kopetsky said that when she walked in she was immediately attacked by a girl wielding a knife and what she thought was a large stick.

'The victim said her attacker was swinging wildly at her with the knife and stick and did not say a word to her,' said Kopetsky in the affidavit.

Police later found a hunting-style knife with an 8-inch serrated blade and a hammer in the bathroom, but Piccolo had fled the scene in a grey 1992 Buick Park Avenue with Nebraska plate number.

Kopetzky told police after the attack she didn't know her attacker's name but recognized her as a junior.Police said the staff member recognized her as Piccolo.

At the time of the attack, Pius senior Jacob Miller, 17, said he is a friend of the Kopetzky. He told KOLN-TV she was a kind, wonderful classmate.

'I don’t know why anybody would be mad at her,' he said.

Police said that the school's surveillance cameras showed Piccolo exiting the school just after the assault and driving away in an eastward direction.
