Sam Alardyce said after Sunday’s game he can’t tell Wayne Rooney where to play. After his display against Slovakia, the England manager needs to get a grip on his captain and tell him to play higher up the field. With Rooney in a deep-lying midfield role for most of the match, Harry Kane was isolated up front and it killed his game. For Kane to be most effective he needs players in and around him to link up with. The Tottenham striker is a very intelligent player but he isn’t blessed with great pace so needs players to get closer to him.
