A busy commuter train which crashed injuring 33 people on Saturday was 'side-swiped' by a work train, New York governor Andrew Cuomo said.

Eleven people were taken to hospital after the eastbound train slammed in to a work train near New Hyde Park, around 20 miles east of Manhattan, shortly after 9pm. At least four were seriously injured.  Everyone else was treated at the scene. 

Gov. Cuomo, who was at the scene on Sunday, told reporters that a train had been doing maintenance work but had somehow entered the clearance space of the Long Island rail road (LIRR) train.

Both had been travelling east at around 9pm on Saturday when they 'side-swiped' each other.

The 12-car passenger train had been carrying 600 people when in crashed in Long Island.

National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the accident to determine the cause.

Photos of the wreck, posted on social media, showed at two of the derailed train cars leaning askew.

Passengers aboard the train described the terrifying moment that the two engines collided.

Witnesses say the saw sparks flying from between the two trains which began shaking more and more violently until they finally stopped.

It comes days after a train derailed in the Bronx causing widespread Amtrak delays. 

Earlier this month a New Jersey Transit train smashed into Hoboken station, killing a young mother on board.

Long Island Rail Road spokesman Sal Arena said the work train caught fire after being crashed into but no one was seriously hurt. 

Nassau County Police confirmed between 15 and 20 people had been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It comes nine days after a New Jersey commuter train slammed into Hoboken station, injuring more than 100 people and killing one.  

Fabiola Bittar de Kroon died in the accident. 

The Metropolitan Transport Association (MTA), which controls the stretch of track, will also carry out an investigation, a Nassau County Police Spokesman said on Saturday night.

Long Island Rail Road was not available to confirm details of the crash.

It uploaded a statement to its website to announce services running in both directions would be canceled. 

'LIRR train service is suspended in both directions on the Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson and Oyster Bay Branches due to a train derailment near New Hyde Park,' it said.' 

Unharmed passengers shared videos from inside their carriage on social media as they waited to be evacuated. 

'At approximately 9:10 p.m. this evening, a train on the Long Island Rail Road was heading eastbound on the mainline when the first three cars of a 12 car train derailed about one half mile east of the New Hyde Park Station,' the governor said in a statement last night.

'Approximately 600 passengers were on board at the time of tonight's incident. Thankfully, early reports indicate that injuries are minimal. 

'At this time, 11 people have sustained injuries, none of which are considered to be serious.

'Staff from the MTA and the LIRR are on the scene and will work around the clock to determine the cause of this derailment and restore service as quickly as possible.

'We will continue to provide the public with additional information as it becomes available,' he said in a statement.
