Thousands on social media are calling for Billy Bush to be fired from NBC after he was captured in a controversial 2005 video with Donald Trump who was bragging about women.

In the shocking recording obtained by the Washington Post, Trump can be heard boasting about his attempts to seduce a married woman and how being a 'star' means he can get away with 'anything' when trying to bed a woman.

The video was made on an Access Hollywood set in 2005 as Trump was newly married to Melania and Bush was a host on the show.

Bush apologized for his role in the recording on Friday, saying in a statement: 'Obviously I'm embarrassed and ashamed. It's no excuse, but this happened eleven years ago - I was younger, less mature, and acted foolishly in playing along. I'm very sorry.'

The 44-year-old swiftly deleted his Twitter account on Friday in the wake of the shocking revelation.

However, his Facebook page that remained online and was flooded with negative comments as many called for him to be fired from the Today Show at NBC.

'After everything the two of you said and then you ask the woman to hug Donald and then hug you.

'You are sickening! You're just as big as a pig and scumbag as trump is.'

Despite the backlash, it appears Bush will keep his job on the Today Show.

Page Six reports that although NBC executives are 'appalled' by the comments, the host won't be sacked because they were made more than a decade ago.

'It happened 11 years ago … Billy was in a different place. He was a lot younger and more immature. He's definitely embarrassed by this, but his job at 'Today' is safe,' a network insider reportedly said.

In the recording published on Friday, Trump says: 'I moved on her and I failed. I'll admit it. I did try and f*** her. She was married...'

'And I moved on her very heavily. In fact, I took her out furniture shopping. She wanted to get some furniture. I said, 'I'll show you where they have some nice furniture'.

'I moved on her like a b***h, but I couldn't get there. And she was married,' he continues.

'Then all of a sudden I see her, she's now got the big phony t*ts and everything. She's totally changed her look.'

It's been revealed that the married woman Trump was referencing was longtime entertainment reporter and current Entertainment Tonight co-host Nancy O'Dell, according to Access Hollywood.

'There were seven other people on the bus with Mr. Trump and Billy Bush at the time,' Access Hollywood host Natalie Morales said.

'Upon arriving at our NBC lot our camera crew was let off the bus, so they could record Mr Trump getting off.'

'What you are about to hear is what Mr Trump said about former Access Hollywood anchor Nancy O'Dell to Billy Bush,' Morales said in reference to Trump's controversial comments.

At times during the 2005 conversation, another man's voice - presumably Bush's - can be heard on the recording.

Bush and Trump were on the set of the soap opera Days of Our Lives, as Trump was about to record a segment on the show and Bush was there to interview him about it.

The pair were captured chatting, presumably unaware their mics were recording the exchange.

The Republican nominee is later heard bragging about how his celebrity status allows him to do 'anything' to women.

Access Hollywood claims Donald Trump was talking about Nancy O'Dell - a long-time entertainment journalist and current Entertainment Tonight co-host.

In the audio that emerged on Friday, Trump also discussed the host's appearance after detailing his unsuccessful effort to sleep with her.

'Then all of a sudden I see her, she's now got the big phony t*ts and everything. She's totally changed her look,' he said in the 2005 recording.

O'Dell has been married twice, the first time to Richard O'Dell from 1995 to November 2004. She was married for a second time to Keith Zubchevich in June 2005.

It is unclear when Trump tried to seduce the television host.

Late Friday night, Trump released a video statement where he apologized again for the comments and said that he was 'not perfect.'

Shortly after the recording emerged, Hillary Clinton tweeted: 'This is horrific. We cannot allow this man to become president.'

Meghan McCain, the daughter of former Republican candidate John McCain, also commented on the recording, saying: 'This godforsaken election. This vile excuse for a nominee. I cannot find the humor in any of this.'

Trump's former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski appeared on CNN on Friday and defended the Republican nominee, saying: 'We're electing a leader. We're not electing a Sunday school teacher.'

Zucker: 'That's some pressure right there.'

Bush: 'Seriously, you had to take one of us as a date.'

Zucker: 'I have to take the Fifth on that one… I'll take both.'

Trump (near the Day of Our Lives studio): 'Which way?'

Zucker: 'Make a right. Here we go.'

Bush: 'Here he goes. I'm gonna leave you here. Give me my microphone. '

Trump: 'OK. OK. Oh, you're finished?'

Bush: 'You're my man. Yeah.'

Trump: 'Oh, good.'

Bush: 'I'm gonna go do our show. '
