  • Fort Wayne police say they received a call reporting threatening behavior from a man armed with a knife near a Holiday Inn
  • An officer demanded the man drop the knife
  • The man ignored the officer's demand and began approaching the officer, police said
  • That's when the officer opened fire and shot the suspect

Police in Fort Wayne, Indiana, shot and killed a man on Saturday who approached an officer with a knife and ignored officers’ instructions to drop the weapon.

The police said that they received a distress call about a man behaving in a threatening manner in the rear of a Hallmark Inn, according to the Journal Gazette.

Cops said that the knife-wielding man was given ‘plenty of opportunities to drop the knife.’

When he refused, the officer opened fire. He then kicked the knife away from the man.

Soon after, police called first responders, who pronounced the man dead at the scene.

This was the second deadly incident in a span of 24 hours.

On Friday, a Fort Wayne SWAT team ended a tense hostage crisis when it shot and killed Joseph S. Schroeder.

Crisis teams negotiated with Schroeder, 36, for six hours as he held a young child hostage inside a home.

Police believe that Schroeder, who was armed with a knife, posed a danger to the child.

There was also a woman inside the home who was unable to get out, according to WANE.

After Schroeder refused to communicate with police by telephone, the authorities summoned SWAT armored vehicles.

Just before dawn on Friday, officers broke into the home and shot the man when they noticed he was standing over the child with ‘two large-edged weapons.’
