Ryder Cup player ratings: Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed shone but Danny Willett summed up his Hazeltine weekend with a four-letter expletive

  • Team USA beat Europe 17-11 to regain the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine
  • Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters were the pick of the European visitors
  • Patrick Reed produced some stunning golf for the Americans
  • Danny Willett was among European rookies to find going tough

Team USA regained the Ryder Cup in emphatic fashion at Hazeltine as the home side blew away their European guests 17-11 over three days of stunning golf.

Patrick Reed was the star of the show for the home side, while Phil Mickelson turned on the style to contribute two-and-a-half points, including a share of a sensational singles clash with Sergio Garcia, and European rookies Thomas Pieters and Rafa Cabrera-Bello were in inspired form.

Here, Sportsmail's DEREK LAWRENSON reflects on the individual performances of the two teams of 12 players - and both captains - in Minnesota...

TEAM EUROPE

RORY MCILROY - 9

It's hard to see what more he could he have done. Even Seve got tired by the singles when the emotional leader.

Won 3, Lost 2, Halved 0, Points 3

DANNY WILLETT - 3

Used a four-letter expletive to describe how his first Ryder Cup went and, well, who are we to argue?

Won 0, Lost 3, Halved 0, Points 0

HENRIK STENSON - 6

A little inconsistent but that happens when you're 40 and asked to play five matches. Brilliant singles display.

Won 2, Lost 3, Halved 0, Points 2

CHRIS WOOD - 6

Should have played at least one more match. Composed whenever he was allowed out on to the course.

Won 1, Lost 1, Halved 0, Points 1

SERGIO GARCIA - 8

Unlucky to be tied to Kaymer for two matches. Took part in a singles game against Mickelson for the ages.

Won 1, Lost 2, Halved 2, Points 2

RAFA CABRERA-BELLO - 8

You can't ask more from a rookie than to stay unbeaten and beat a current major champ in the singles.

Won 2, Lost 0, Halved 1, Points 2½

JUSTIN ROSE - 6

Another who would have benefited from playing just four matches. Never got to grips with the greens.

Won 2, Lost 3, Halved 0, Points 2

ANDY SULLIVAN - 5

Actually played all right despite losing both matches. He should have seen more action.

Won 0, Lost 2, Halved 0, Points 0

MATTHEW FITZPATRICK - 4

Maybe it was a Ryder Cup too soon for the 22-year-old but how would we know given how sparingly he was used?

Won 0, Lost 2, Halved 0, Points 0

Andy Sullivan lost both of his two matches on his first Ryder Cup appearance

LEE WESTWOOD - 3

A Ryder Cup too far for the great stalwart of so many. Sad to see him crumble so visibly under pressure.

Won 0, Lost 3, Halved 0, Points 0

MARTIN KAYMER - 3

It summed up his week when he delivered a singles point after the trophy had already been lost.

Won 1, Lost 3, Halved 0, Points 1

THOMAS PIETERS - 9

Might well have been the finest rookie performance Europe has ever seen. Quite simply the next special one.

Won 4, Lost 1, Halved 0, Points 4

DARREN CLARKE (captain) - 5

Conducted himself well and the team were behind him to the end, but placed far too much faith in experience and not enough in youth.

TEAM USA

DUSTIN JOHNSON - 6

Suprisingly low key. Mind you, losing out on $10million to Rory the previous Sunday can't have helped.

Won 2, Lost 2, Halved 0, Points 2

JORDAN SPIETH - 6

Very lucky to have Reed as his partner. As it has all year, his technique let him down under pressure.

Won 2, Lost 2, Halved 1, Points 2½

PHIL MICKELSON - 9

Zero to hero in the space of two years. This was a stunning display from a man now well into his mid-40s.

Won 2, Lost 1, Halved 1, Points 2½

PATRICK REED - 9

The heartbeat of this American team. He will give Europe all sorts of problems for a generation.

Won 3, Lost 1, Halved 1, Points 3½

JIMMY WALKER - 5

He's had a poor all year apart from one bonanza week at the PGA, and so it continued.

Won 1, Lost 2, Halved 0, Points 1

BROOKS KOEPKA - 8

A youthful powerhouse for whom this Ryder Cup was just the first of many. Just pipped by Pieters as top rookie.

Won 3, Lost 1, Halved 0, Points 3

BRANDT SNEDEKER - 8

Benefited from the gentle set-up that placed so much emphasis on putting. Revelled in the ra-ra atmosphere.

Won 3, Lost 0, Halved 0, Points 3

ZACH JOHNSON - 6

Finally got to finish on the winning side at the fifth attempt. Played his part quietly — as so often.

Won 2, Lost 1, Halved 0, Points 2

JB HOLMES - 5

Has now played in two Ryder Cups and won two. America's lucky charm, though he didn't contribute much.

Won 1, Lost 2, Halved 0, Points 1

RICKIE FOWLER - 6

Sometimes it's just better to be lucky than good. Played poorly and still won twice. Go figure.

Won 2, Lost 1, Halved 0, Points 2

MATT KUCHAR - 6

Contributed to the fast start on Friday and brought the best out of Mickelson on Saturday.

Won 2, Lost 2, Halved 0, Points 2

RYAN MOORE - 7

Showed once more it's hard to beat a man who can putt in match play. A very successful late wildcard pick.

Won 2, Lost 1, Halved 0, Points 2

DAVIS LOVE III (captain) - 8

Some odd decisions but after the Medinah meltdown it was good to see one of the nice men of the game gain his redemption.
