Making a splash! Finding Dory swims past $1 billion at worldwide box office

Finding Dory has exceeded the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

The sequel to 2003's Finding Nemo opened internationally in June but benefited from a late release in some European countries in August and September.

The Pixar flick is the third Disney movie to move past the $1 billion mark this year, with Marvel's Captain America: Civil War grossing $1.153 billion and Disney Animation Studios' Zootopia grossing $1.023 billion.

Finding Dory is North America's highest grossing movie of the year to date, earning $485 million and $517 million internationally.

It debuted in the States on June 17 with $135 million, the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated film. 

It is the second Pixar animation in history to top $1 billion after Toy Story 3.

Austria, Germany, Italy and Japan were the last foreign markets that Finding Dory opened in during the last two weeks of September.

Directed by Andrew Stanton, Finding Dory is now the fifth biggest animated film of all time worldwide.

Ellen DeGeneres, who voiced Dory in the original, returned to voice the forgetful blue tang fish. 

Newcomer Hayden Rolence voiced Nemo and Albert Brooks returned as Marlin.
