Donald Trump's running mate, Mike Pence, has canceled plans to visit New Jersey for a fundraiser amid suggestions he is struggling to support the GOP nominee after the lewd hot mic video emerged.

The Governor of Indiana, a Christian family man who has been married for more than 30 years, is furious about Trump's 'locker-room' antics.

He  was scheduled to appear at a fundraiser in Toms River, New Jersey, on Monday hosted by the Ocean County Republican Organization, but has pulled out.

Pence tweeted his congratulations to Trump almost immediately after the debate ended

The cancellation comes in the midst of the campaign crisis caused by the damaging video of Trump boasting about trying to seduce a married woman and claiming he could grab women by their genitals 'because he was famous'.

Pence said on Saturday he was 'offended' by Trump's words and actions and added: 'I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them.'

He added: 'I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them. I am grateful that he has expressed remorse and apologized to the American people.

'We pray for his family and look forward to the opportunity he has to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night.'

It is not clear how Pence viewed Trump's performance and whether he believed the GOP nominee properly apologized for his actions.

The pair have not been seen together for several weeks and there is a whispering campaign among some Republicans calling for Pence to replace Trump as the nominee.

Several other senior Republicans have called Trump to drop out and be replaced by Pence as the GOP presidential candidate.

The Trump campaign's website lists Pence as scheduled to attend two events in North Carolina today and it is not clear if he is planning to bail on those events.

Hope Hicks, a spokeswoman for Trump's campaign, has not commented on why Pence's New Jersey event was canceled.

Entry to the Pence fundraiser required a $50 contribution and was limited to 250 people.

On Sunday morning, Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway cancelled TV  appearances at the last minute.

Rudy Giuliani, who replaced her, was stumped during appearances on Fox News , CNN and NBC's Meet The Press.

It showed that some of the billionaire's surrogates are struggling to support him after the video was published by the Washington Post on Friday.
